FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

If your child owns a mobile phone, laptop, tablet device or has access to a desktop computer, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to make plans to attend a very important event. On Monday, March 24th at 7pm, the Milton Public Schools will be hosting an Internet Safety Night presentation in the Milton High School auditorium.

The speaker will be Katie LeClerc Greer, an expert who has provided Internet/technology safety training to schools, law enforcement agencies, national conferences, and community organizations throughout the country.

To give an idea of what might be covered in this presentation, please see if you can answer the following questions:

True or False? Sexting is not a crime if you are under 18.
True or False? There is no correlation between sexting and other risky sex behaviors
True or False? It’s okay to give out private information as long as you’re in a private chat room.
True or False? The majority of parents keep a close watch on their teens’ online activities.*

*If you answered “true” to all of the questions above, you should make it a point to come and learn more at this presentation. If you answered “true” to any of these questions, there is still a great deal of valuable information to learn. None of the above statements are true.

This evening event is for parents and guardians only and we encourage every parent in our district to attend. We have heard that this could be one of the most informative 90 minute presentations you may attend this year.

Ms. Greer will be speaking to both middle and high school students during assemblies earlier in the day on March 24th, so her evening presentation will be tailored towards parents and guardians. Please do not bring anyone under age 18 to this event.
Ms. Greer’s unique educational and professional background has resulted in dynamic programs that appeal to all age groups:

• Former Intelligence Analyst, Massachusetts State Police
• Former Director of Internet Safety, Massachusetts Attorney Generals’ Office
• Advisory Board Member, Internet Keep Safe Coalition
• Recognized, national expert in Internet/digital safety and technology, advising various governmental and private agencies
• Featured on CNN, Huffington Post, Vanity Fair, and USA Today
• Presented to thousands of students, parents, educators and administrators across the country

Ms. Greer recently spoke to a group at Wellesley Middle School and their assistant principal, Kathy Gordon, said, “This speaker commanded the audience’s full attention….since her background is relative, and very compelling.” Ms. Gordon said this was one of the best presentations that she has ever seen.

This program has been strongly recommended to me by MPS parent and Wellesley Public School teacher JJ Kelleher, who called it one of the most informative events of the year.

Please make every effort to attend this important presentation on Monday, March 24th.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE UPDATE

There has been one School Committee meeting since my last E-blast. Below is a summary of that meeting.

March 12th: This meeting began with recognition of some of the Milton High winter athletic teams that made it to post-season play. Coaches and athletes from Boys Hockey, Boys Indoor Track, Girls Indoor Track and Ski Team were invited to speak about their seasons. Other “tournament” teams will be invited to the next meeting. Also, the Future Problem Solving teams and their coaches were recognized for their success this season. Next, the Tucker School Site Council came to give their School Improvement Plan to the committee. The group presented MCAS data, reviewed the curriculum and talked about special programs taking place at Tucker School. Director of Pupil Personnel Services Karen Clasby spoke next and outlined the many different programs available to students in the district with special needs. The committee then voted to authorize the superintendent to pursue restitution for certain residency cases. Next, they voted to approve the vendor warrants for the school district at School Committee meetings. They also voted to approve the Second Quarter Report, which will be posted online. I wanted to give a brief update to parents of current Kindergarten students regarding the Grade One program selection process. As many of you may already know, there were lotteries held at the Glover and Cunningham Elementary Schools for available seats in the French Immersion program. We have been in contact with every family whose child did not get placed in the program of their choice and the next update on this issue will be in June.

I want to reiterate that we have two outstanding programs in the Milton Public Schools: the Innovation Pathway, which is a combination of STEM-based curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) along with Spanish-language instruction and the French Immersion program, which emphasizes the acquisition of French within the grade-level curriculum. We have talented faculty and administrators in both of these programs and we are very proud of the work they do for each and every Milton Public School student. We ask that families going through the Grade One assignment process remain patient during the next few months. If parents have questions about this issue, please call Assistant Superintendent John Phelan at 617-696-4811.

I have great news to share regarding the Future Problem Solving Program. Three Milton teams have been invited to compete at the FPS State Bowl at Babson College on Saturday, April 5th: A Pierce, Middle Division team, coached by Nicole Hoyceanyls made up of Isabelle Neville, Sachin Meier and Hue-Ninh Ngyuen, a Pierce Middle Division team also coached by Nicole Hoyceanyls made up of Timothy Karoff, Sawyer Flanagan and David Casaz and a Tucker, Junior Division team coached by Thuy Nguyen, made up Olivia Ketler, Claire Walko, Blake Strong and Oskar Peloquin. Congratulations to these coaches and team members on their extraordinary work. Each team that is not invited to attend the State Bowl may send one individual to compete. We will also be cheering for individual Glover students June Padera, Anna Fahy and Hugh Cronin; Tucker student Dominique Thomas; Collicot students Maggie Stockbridge and Maureen Lang; and Cunningham students Will Milliken, Paul Kates, Lila Slymon and Philip Phan. Good luck to our State Bowl participants as they prepare for a problem on the topic of Land Transportation!

The Milton High School Dramatics Society performed their interpretation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole at the preliminaries of the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s annual High School Drama Festival earlier this month. Directed by MHS juniors Garrett Sager and Amy Savino, Rabbit Hole is a sympathetic, realistic, and deeply moving treatment of how family members pick up the pieces after the tragic accidental death of a young child. Milton performed at Tewksbury High School against seven other schools, only three of which advanced to the semi-finals. Emily Dsida and Evy Oliverio both won acting awards, Emily for her portrayal of the range of bereaved mother Becca’s emotions and Evy for skillful comic relief as Izzy in what can otherwise be a very dark play. These awards thus make these two talented actors members of METG’s 2014 “All-Star Acting Troupe.”

Other cast members included Liam Halloran as grieving father Howie, Devan Callahan as Becca’s mother Nat, and Matt McAuliffe as Jason, the teenaged driver who causes the tragedy. The ensemble included Julia Butler, Mariah Conway, Corina Delerme, Audrey Erickson, Omolade Gbolade, Colette Nourie, Stephen Tan, and Michael Wyatt. All gave inspired performances at both Festival and the MHS open dress rehearsal in Winchester Auditorium on February 26th. The technical crew was led by stage manager Sharon Lui and assistant stage manager Maddie Scott, and included Matt O’Sullivan on lighting, Olivia Sidoti on sound, and a construction/shift crew consisting of Gustavo Arnal, Anne Marie Grudem, Phil Janvier, Katrina Ramkissoon, Javana Samuels, Connor Roche, and Christian Urbino. Drama advisors Sheila Walsh and Eileen Mullen accompanied the troupe to Tewksbury, where all enjoyed a day of fine high school drama and connected with students and directors from competing schools. Milton last made it to semi-finals in 2012 and, with a young but seasoned acting troupe, has high hopes for next year’s Festival. A Spring show of one-acts is also in the works – please watch for upcoming details!

Our fifth-grade students had a very exciting day at the State House this week. The 20 students who competed in the Iron Chef Jr. contest were invited to the State House to participate in the “School Nutrition Annual Breakfast at the State House” on Thursday. Our students were chosen to speak at the event, handed out quinoa salad and recipes, and explain how the Iron Chef Jr. competition was held here in Milton. Assistant Superintendent John Phelan, School Committee Member Becky Padera and Food Service Director Jackie Morgan attended this event with our students and said these fifth-graders did a terrific job.

As I mentioned in a previous E-blast, this weekend is Massachusetts All State Music Festival and Conference. All of our music teachers will be at this conference and attend three days worth of workshops. In addition, seven Milton High School students were accepted to the festival. Also, the first ever Treble Chorus, comprised of 17 students, will perform on Saturday, March 22nd at the Seaport Hotel in Boston.

Ninth and tenth grade students participated in the Silver Protractor competition while 11th and 12th grade students participated in the Golden Calculator competition. Students competed in teams of four, completing four rounds of individual questions and a team round. The style of the in-house competition mimicked the South Shore Math League competitions, in which our Milton High Math Team competes. Congratulations to the following: Winners of Golden Calculator (11th and 12th grade students): Jonathan Carrera, Mike Ricciuti, Martin Rebrovic and Evan Ditullio. Winners of the Silver Protractor (9th and 10th graders):, Nolan Carvalho, Harry Kong, Sindhu Banerjee and Emily Chow.

FUNDRAISING/GRANT NEWS

I have some fantastic news to share – and we would like to ask for your help. A group of five Milton High School students competed in a statewide LifeSmarts competition earlier this week at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and WON the State title. This group of five students will now travel to Orlando, Florida during the last week of April to represent both Milton High School and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the National LifeSmarts Championship. Congratulations to Jack Caljouw, Albert Enyedy, Maryam El-Sayed, Cormac Conners and Chris Ricciuti, along with Coach and Milton High School Math teacher Nancy Mikels.

Our high school LifeSmarts team qualified for the Nationals last year, which was held in Atlanta, Georgia. However, there was sponsorship funding provided to winning teams by the organizing body, which is no longer available this year. As a result, we need to find a way to send these intelligent, talented and hard working students to represent the Milton Public Schools and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on a national stage. We are asking for members of the Milton community to help defray the cost of this trip.

Between airfare, hotel and meals for five days, we estimate the cost to compete at the Nationals to be approximately $9,000 for the group of five students plus two coaches. We must register and pay for this trip within 24 hours if our students intend to compete. My hope is that this could be done tomorrow, Friday, March 21st.

If you know or work for a non-profit group, business or individual who could commit $500 or $1,000 towards the cost of this competition, I am asking that you please forward that information to Milton High School Principal James Jette (jjette@miltonps.org) at your earliest convenience. He will then follow up with specific information about LifeSmarts, the trip and any other information they may need that will assist them in making a donation on behalf of Milton High School’s LifeSmart team. If donors would like to make a contribution of any amount, they can send in a check made payable to Milton High School Activity Fund and write “LifeSmarts” in the memo section of the check. The check can be dropped off at Milton High or sent to:

James Jette
Milton High School
25 Gile Road
Milton, MA 02186
C/O LifeSmarts Team

Our students will also be fundraising to help pay for this trip, but with such a short time frame to raise money, we need your help and the help of the community.

The National LifeSmarts Championship brings together top student teams from across the country to demonstrate knowledge in five core topics areas: personal finance, consumer rights and responsibilities, technology, health and safety, and the environment. LifeSmarts is a fun and educational event in which everyone learns, expands their experiences and opportunities, meets new friends, and explores a new area of the country.

Please contact Mr. Jette (jjette@miltonps.org) if you have a lead for us or a fundraising idea for this group. Again, we need to move quickly in order to get our students registered.

Thank you very much for your consideration and anticipated support!

AMBASSADOR PAGE

Students: State Champions! A group of Milton High School students won the State Championship event for the LifeSmarts program and will be travelling to the Nationals representing both Milton High School and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Orlando, Florida. (please see the item above under “Fundraising.” ) Congratulations and best of luck to these students and their coach, Nancy Mikels: Jack Caljouw, Albert Enyedy, Maryam El-Sayed, Cormac Conners and Chris Ricciuti.

Staff: I would like to thank a group of teachers at the Collicot who work with our youngest students. The Integrated Pre-school program, which is located on the first floor of the Collicot Elementary School, is a unique pre-school experience that mixes children who have special needs with peer role models in the same classroom. Students aged 3-5 attend this pre-school and are taught by the outstanding team of Mary Beth Callahan, Angela Ryan and Jessica Cleary-Moone. In addition, some students also see specialists Maureen Butler, Trish Leahy and Judy Fleming. I would like to thank these incredible teachers, along with Collicot Special Education Chairperson Karen Walorz, for the work they do each and every day.

Volunteers: Not many people outside of the Milton Public Schools athletic department know what an incredible resource we have from a local family. Tim Fallon, owner of Fallon Ambulance has been our “go-to” person for medial issues for many years. His company, Fallon Ambulance, has provided EMT and ambulance service for countless Milton Public School events at no charge, from football and hockey games to community celebrations on our high school campus. Whenever we ask Tim Fallon for help, we get it. In addition to staffing athletic events for us, they have also provided free CPR and First Aid training to our athletic department staff. They have trained our staff on the use of AEDs (automated external defibrillator) and have serviced the AEDs within our buildings, again, at no cost to the schools. We are very grateful to Tim Fallon and Fallon Ambulance for their generosity.

The Milton Public School system is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the provision of quality educational programs for all students. The Milton Public School system does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, genetic information, age or sexual orientation.
