FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

At last night’s School Committee meeting, I made the public aware of the following information:

“I want to update the public on an incident involving Kenneth Aubert, who retired at the end of the 2012- 2013 school year as head of the guidance department at Milton High School. Mr. Aubert has been charged by the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office with five counts of larceny in connection with the collection of fees for Advanced Placement tests at the High School during the years 2009 through 2013. I want to stress a few points about this.

  • First: When it came to the attention of the Milton High School staff that certain records regarding the collection and payment of fees for Advanced Placement tests appeared to be incomplete, we immediately reported the matter to local law enforcement authorities. We have cooperated fully with the Milton Police Department and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office during the investigation of this incident.
  • Second: We have commissioned an outside, independent review of our practices and procedures in this area to make sure that we are doing everything possible to prevent something like this from happening again.  They have evaluated our existing processes and procedures around the handling of cash and are developing procedures for strengthened controls going forward.
  • Third: No students’ scores were impacted and every AP test was administered. The allegations in this case are of theft – theft from the Milton Public Schools and theft from some students.
  • Finally: We deeply appreciate the professionalism of the Milton Police Department and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office in this matter and we will continue to cooperate fully.

I hope everyone understands that because this is an ongoing criminal prosecution, there are limits to what I know and to what I can say. So,  if you have any questions about the case, I would refer you to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.”

Last spring, World Language Department Head Dr. Martine Fisher arranged for several of the elementary French Immersion teachers to visit the Milton Public Library and go through the library’s collection of French books for children and “level” them, using numerals from 1-5. Teachers Fatima Bourass, Marie Brown, Esra Buyukozer, Zeina Hamada, and Emma Segall arrived on a recent Saturday morning and powered their way through the books on the shelves. Several of those teachers came back a few weeks later to deal with the books that were returned after the initial visit. Since then, Mme Brown stops by every few weeks to check on new arrivals. According to MPL Librarian Elaine Weischedel, the project has been a great success for all concerned. Parents feel more confident helping their children choose books from the collection since the level numbers give them some much needed guidance. Library staff are also better able to assist families in selecting materials.

Middle School:

It is going to be a very exciting year in science at the Pierce Middle School!  Thanks to the Milton Public Schools’ Advancement Budget last year, the Pierce was able to purchase new science curriculum and materials.  These new units will be fully implemented across all grade levels this year with each grade having an integrated science experience that includes Life, Earth and Space, and Physical Science.   Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to investigate different aspects of the scientific world through a mixture of hands-on, inquiry-based activities and structured discussions.  Some of the exciting new curriculum experiences students can look forward to this year include:  sixth grade students taking a virtual trip to the Grand Canyon with our New FOSS Earth History Curriculum to learn more  about geology, collecting data on milkweed bugs and building ecosystems as part of our new 7th grade Ecosystems curriculum, and designing experiments to help us better understand the weather in the 8th grade as part of our Weather and Climate unit.

High School:   This week, students from Sakae Higashi High School in Saitama, Japan, came to Milton High School for a visit and a meaningful cultural exchange.  This exchange, in its 9th year, has become a major highlight of the school year as well as a unique cultural learning experience.   With over 500 Japanese students visiting over the two days, it is recognized as the largest such exchange in the United States.  Sakae Higashi High School is located in Saitama Prefecture, about one hour north of Tokyo and is a selective private school.  Each year they charter a trip to the United States so that their students can learn more about the culture and language of their favored trading partner.

Each day, 250 Japanese students descended on Milton High School to attend a short assembly and then pair up with and shadow a Milton High School student “Ambassador” for the remainder of the day.  In the assembly, there was a musical performance in the auditorium by both the Milton High School marching band as well as a cheerleading performance from the Sakae Higashi students.  After they finished their performances, the students proceeded to class, where the Japanese students shadowed their ambassador.  They also have lunch together and spend quality time getting to know each other. Kathleen Kelley of Milton High School made all of the arrangements for the program and enabled a robust group of student leaders to help her arrange the large people-moving event.  Many gifts were exchanged during the event, as gift-giving or “Omiyagi” is an integral part of Japanese culture.  The Sakae Higashi group spends eight days in the USA in Boston, New York and Las Vegas during the trip, but Milton High School is the most important part of the trip, as it is their only educational destination.

The exchange has been sponsored by American Learning, Inc. a non-profit cultural exchange organization founded in 1991 by Milton resident Steve Shapiro.  “Mr. Jette, Ms. Kelley and the entire faculty have been wonderful to work with and very committed to this unique opportunity for their students to come fact-to-face with a large group of students from 6,000 miles away,” said Mr. Shapiro. “Although the visit is brief, it is a great way for Milton students to meet a counterpart from a very interesting culture and have an opportunity to converse.  The visitors have been studying English for 4-6 years, and it will be a lot of fun for both sides to have a good chat.”

For more information about the cultural exchange, residents may contact Shapiro at americanlearning@gmail.com.

I am very excited to begin my new role as Family Outreach Liaison. My first week has gotten off to great start.  Over the next month I will be meeting with school principals, PTOs, Leadership Teams, Diversity Committees, School Site Councils and attending many of the great events taking place in all our schools.  In the meantime, if you would like to reach me, please feel free to contact via email at mmckenna@miltonps.org or by telephone at 617-696-5040 ext. 5588.

HEALTH NEWS

The following item was sent to us by Margaret Gibbons, Director of Nurses for the MPS:

Each fall always brings the cold, sore throat and “stomach bug” season which lasts through winter and into spring. This year the “enterovirus D 68” is added to the list. Additionally, we know that all students “share their germs” with their peers and teachers. The Milton Public Schools work very closely with the Milton Board of Health and follow all Massachusetts Department of Public Health recommendations in all school health matters. We are requesting that all parents / guardians assess their children carefully before sending them to school.  If your child does exhibit any symptoms of illness, please keep your child home for twenty four hours after the symptoms are gone. If your child has a fever with any of the following symptoms: headache, stomach pain, sore throat, diarrhea and or nausea / vomiting, your child must remain at home.  Sending a not fully recovered student to school ensures that others will get sick.  Contact your primary care provider if necessary or if symptoms persist. Please encourage your child to use proper hand washing techniques after coughing, sneezing, before and after meals, and of course, after using the bathroom. If you have a questions or concerns, please contact your school nurse.

UPCOMING MPS EVENTS

We are collecting gently used books for elementary school students to help build classroom libraries for our teachers and home libraries for our students. Before your next yard sale or book donation, please consider gifting your books to the Milton Public Schools. Bring your children’s books to the Cunningham/Collicot driveway on Saturday, October 4th from 9am to noontime. Our staff and student volunteers will unload your car, then sort and level the books to be sure that all Milton Public School students have access to a fantastic diversity of literature. Research shows that one indicator of academic success is the number of books in a student’s home. Help boost student achievement, improve early literacy, enhance community spirit, promote recycling and celebrate literature. Donate your books and help share the gift of reading. For more information, please contact Family Literacy Committee members:  Jennifer Troy (jtroy@miltonps.org), Jessica Royster (jroyster@miltonps.org), Sara Doherty (sdoherty@miltonps.org) and Lori Henry (lhenry@miltonps.org)

When Evan Jones, MHS Class of 2011, passed away at the age of 19 from Sudden Unexpected Death due to Epilepsy (SUDEP), the entire town mourned the untimely loss of this generous and kind athlete.  Now, his family and friends continue to turn their grief into something positive by raising money to improve the weight room at MHS, something very important to Evan. On Saturday, October 11, the Second Annual fundraising event at the high school entitled “Exercise for Evan,” and will feature a wide array of games and activities including a Dunk Tank, Zumba class, Boot Camp, Dodge Ball, a 50/50 raffle and more.  The event is from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Brooks Field.  In the event of rain, the fundraiser will be moved to the Copeland Field House.  Admission is $20 per person, and $5 for children 10 and younger. FOOD SERVICE NEWS

The following information was submitted by Jacqueline Morgan, Director of Food Service for the Milton Public Schools:

Milton Schools will be participating once again in the Farm to School Program and the Harvest of the Month campaign.  This will be our seventh year having farm fresh produce on our menus. Mass. Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month campaign promotes a different Massachusetts-grown food each month in K-12 cafeterias across the state. The program’s goal is to encourage healthy food choices by increasing students’ exposure to seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers and building excitement about school meals.   Featured local foods for 2014-2015:

September – Tomatoes, October – Pears, November – Kale, December – Carrots, January – Apples, February – Butternut Squash, March – Dairy, April – Potatoes, May – Seeds and Seedlings, June – Strawberries.

Harvest of the Month is a great opportunity to celebrate local abundance, experiment with new foods and recipes, and get some positive recognition for your school. We want to help you to continue to lead the way in making farm-fresh foods available to students and staff whenever possible. It also provides wonderful opportunities for school food and nutrition staff, educators, school administrators, family members, and students to collaborate, and to celebrate our commitment to serving locally grown foods with the community! Why Buy Local? Purchasing locally grown food is a great way to encourage students to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and it also supports local farms. Buying local products in season is often very affordable. Food service directors who have introduced local foods programs often report increased meal participation and decreased waste.

Once a year, the Milton Foundation for Education presents Outstanding Teaching Awards to seven teachers or staff members in the Milton Public Schools. The award recipients are surprised in their classrooms, and then honored at a public reception at Milton High School. If you see some Milton students walking around town with a large magnifying glass and wearing a traditional cape coat, it is most likely because they are participating in Milton’s town-wide read.  This year the Friends of the Milton Public Library chose The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Milton sophomores are playing their part by reading “The Speckled Band” in their English classes.  Sophomores in English II focus on the study of literary genres and “The Speckled Band” is an intriguing short story that provides students an opportunity to study the components of a short story while reading a great “whodunit.” A special thanks goes out to Annie Davis and Connie Spiros for their work in getting enough copies of the “The Speckled Band” for every sophomore to own their own copy.  Students also will be participating in the many events hosted by the sponsors of the school-wide read.

STUDENT WORK

I am pleased to introduce a new section to my E-blast which will include samples of student work. This week, we have a poem from an 8th-grade Latin student from Pierce and some artwork samples from Glover students. Enjoy!

Submitted by Pierce Latin teacher D. Huebner:

PEGASUS

Pegasus would go higher and higher!
Because he himself was the best flyer!
I will watch him as he will fly by
As I look up he looks like a butterfly.
He is a magnificent horse,
That rides the sky as his course
— Eve Brearley

Submitted by elementary art teacher Cailtin Clavette:

Students at Glover School have begun the year in art with the study of LINE, one of the most important elements of design.  Each grade level has looked at line in a different and developmentally appropriate way, and created a work of art focusing on the use of this element. For instance, grade 5 students viewed images of city skylines from around the world. They discussed the importance of line in architecture, and created their own “Cityscape Drawings.” These drawings were then transferred to printing plates, and printed in black ink on a painted background to create the illusion of a Cityscape and its reflection. Students will continue from the study of line on to other elements and principles of design, and be introduced to different artists and art from cultures around the world.

ATHLETICS

For generations, Milton High School athletes have excelled on the field, court and track in countless athletic events. League titles were won, state championships were earned and hundreds of student athletes earned scholarships to some of the top colleges and universities in the nation.  But until recently, there was no way to acknowledge those students who gave so much to Milton High School athletics. Former Milton High coach and teacher Michael Goodless thought that should change. About eight years ago, he began to put together a plan to create the Milton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

“Milton High was a school with an outstanding athletic tradition and one of the few schools in Massachusetts with no athletic hall of fame,” said Mr. Goodless. “With the enthusiastic support and encouragement of Superintendent Mary Gormley, I started the process by forming a group of teachers, coaches and administrators who had a passion for athletics.”

With the help of early strong supporters Dick Ryan, Dennis Duggan, Margaret Gibbons and Tom Herget, the group was able to establish bylaws and a plan for the first induction. More recently, the group has been helped by Sean McDonagh, Mark Sullivan, Bill Donovan and others. The first induction was held in 2007, with the unveiling of plaques in the Copeland Field House lobby and a reception at the Common Market. Now, eight years later, there have been 83 individuals inducted, along with 11 teams.  All of the inductees are honored by plaques in the lobby of the Copeland Field House at Milton High School.

The Class of 2014 induction ceremony will be held November 1st at Copeland Field House, followed by a reception at the Hoosic Club and will add another 11 individuals and six teams. This year’s inductees are: John Bibinski 1980, Molly Golden 2007, Pamela Kelley 1982, John Kantaros 1968, Jamie McCormack 1999, Alex Lazar Norrman 2003, Bob Norton 1971, Donald Shea 1943, Kevin Ryan 1993, John Vercollone 1968, Carl Wallin 1957, Baseball 1979, Boys Basketball 1990, Field Hockey 1986, Lacrosse 2000, Softball 2005, Wrestling 1964.

This year’s Board of Directors are: Michael Goodless, Chairperson; Dennis Duggan, Vice-Chairperson; Thomas Herget, Treasurer; and members Dyann Crowley, Bill Donovan, Margaret Gibbons, Sean McDonagh and Dick Ryan.

“It’s a labor of love, that’s for sure,” said Dick Ryan, former MHS Athletic Director and  current board member. “The committee works very hard and we’ve been successful, thanks to the direction of Mike Goodless.”

The 2014 Selection Committee members are: Brian Borde, Dennis Duggan, Margaret Gibbons, Michael Goodless, Thomas Herget, Deirdre Enos Lovett, Gary Maus, Sean McDonagh, Karen Duggan McLaughlin, Ellen McCarthy Needham, Richard Ryan and Tracy Bubas Turgeon.

“The Milton High Athletic Hall of Fame is a hardworking group that does a great job in honoring our student-athletes from all decades,” said James Jette, principal of Milton High School. “I had the luxury this past Saturday, September 20th of meeting some of the inductees, one being Joe Sidoti of the Class of 1964 who will be the first 3-time inductee. Not only are they great athletes, they are great people too. By recognizing the contribution of our high school athletes, we honor our town, our schools and both past and present residents of Milton who excelled at their sport.”

To make a donation to the MHSAHOF or to purchase a ticket to the induction ceremony reception at the Hoosic Club, please email:  bdonovan@miltonps.org

AMBASSADOR PAGE

Students: Three students from Milton High School serve as Student Representatives to the School Committee. These students not only attend the meetings, they participate and comment during these meetings and serve as valuable spokespersons for their peers. Thank you to Audrey Erickson, Matt McCarthy and Spencer Torres for their service on this committee.

Staff:   I would like to recognize and thank Pierce Middle School Principal Dr. Karen Spaulding, who has been invaluable  in training our teacher facilitators in the implementation of our new evaluation model and tool.   Dr. Spaulding has led professional development for teachers and administrators on this new evaluation system which was developed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to promote student learning, growth, and achievement. Dr. Spaulding has worked tirelessly to plan workshops for district educators that focus on meeting performance standards to enhance professional growth and accountability and improve teaching and administrative leadership.  I am very grateful to Dr. Spaulding for her expertise in this area and also for her outstanding leadership of the Pierce Middle School.

Volunteers: I would like to thank some of the hardest working volunteers in the Milton Public Schools. Our PTO presidents are the “front line” volunteers for each of our schools and their work is invaluable. Please help me to thank the following people who donate their time as PTO presidents: Collicot: Mary Clare Cantor, Linda Stefanick, Kerry Kelly, Chuck Karimbakas and Ken Bohlin. Cunningham: Robyn Quinn, Laura Woodward, Suzanne Glazer, Marie Mignosa and Stephanie O’Keefe. Glover: Nancy Kelly and Christine Tobin. Tucker: Kristen Lacasse and Michelle Schweitzer. Pierce Middle School: Sheila Varela, Karyn Viveiros, Marie Kelly and Trish Heelen. Milton High School: Kathy Peltier and Tricia Sullivan.

The Milton Public School system is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the provision of quality educational programs for all students.  The Milton Public School system does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, genetic information, age or sexual orientation.
