SCHOOL COMMITTEE UPDATE

There has been one School Committee meeting since my last E-blast, summarized below:

Wednesday, October 26th:  The meeting began with a visit from members of the MFE to promote the upcoming Monster Dash. Next, the School Committee heard budget presentations from the Cunningham and Glover Site Councils.  This was followed by a visit from Citizens for a Diverse Milton and a review of the district’s Diversity Report. Next, there was a follow-up data presentation by the MPS principals James Jette, Dr, Karen Spaulding, Karen McDavitt, Dr. Elaine McNeil-Girmai, Holly Concannon and Jonathan Redden, along with Curriculum Coordinators Amy Gale, Meredith Kempf, Kat Buchanan and Data Specialist Vy Vu.  Members voted to approve the Annual Report and deferred the remaining agenda items to the next meeting, which will be held on November 9th at 7 pm in the Milton TV Access studio, Room 245, Milton High School.

CURRICULUM NEWS

For this E-blast, I would like to focus on one of our most important resources in the Milton Public Schools – our libraries. I have asked each of our librarians to summarize recent happenings in their schools. Please read below for an update on our libraries:

From Lori Henry, Elementary Librarian: Have you ever wondered how a pumpkin grows? Was Johnny Appleseed a real person? What is an electoral college? In the elementary school libraries we’re discovering the answers to these questions and more, developing and deepening an understanding of the library’s organizational scheme, discussing our favorite reading selections, exploring the online public access catalog to find materials to meet our needs and fuel our passions. We’re analyzing texts that address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge and compare the approaches authors take.  We’re reading widely and fluently to make connections with ourselves, the world and previous reading. We’re challenging ourselves to read new titles, different genres, exciting series and engaging authors.  All this and more is happening in the libraries at Tucker, Glover, Collicot and Cunningham schools!

From Jess Royster, PMS Librarian: The Pierce Middle School Library recently hosted the Scholastic Book Fair. Every year, the Scholastic Book Fair highlights the importance of family literacy and reading for fun, while also raising money for the Pierce Library. We recently purchased new “comfy chairs” for the library, using our Scholastic Dollars raised by past book fairs. Our new comfy chairs are a huge success and a new favorite spot for reading at Pierce!

From Jen Troy, MHS Librarian: The Milton High School library has been busy this Fall. In September new students participated in library orientations to learn about all of the resources available at the high school. October brought many classes to the library to activate their NoodleTools accounts (a research management website subscription) to organize research projects and learn to use information ethically.  This November in collaboration with the English department students will be participating in our annual family literacy activity that encourages the continuation of academic conversations at home. Happy Reading!

What is “Standards-Based Reporting”?

A scholar’s individual achievement on standards is measured on attainment of the learning goals as outlined by state standards. The purpose of this system is to provide accurate information about scholar performance on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The goal is to communicate scholar progress. Standards based reporting will help parents better understand their scholar’s strengths and weaknesses. Before making a determination regarding scholar proficiency, teachers analyze a scholar’s progress over the course of the reporting term. Teachers collect key samples of scholar work as evidence combined with observed demonstration of the skill through various modalities.

Why don’t we use grades?

Scholars and their learning are too complex to be reduced to a simple letter grade. Letter grades do not tell parents which skills their scholars have mastered. The achievement marks indicate a scholar’s progress towards achieving specific grade level standards as identified by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Standards based report cards benefit scholars, teachers, and parents/guardians by providing a detailed outline of the expectations.

The report card is just one component of our reporting system. We encourage a strong home-school connection to keep you informed of your scholar’s progress. The comment box is provided for the teacher to include any additional information, however; to receive the full depth of understanding of your scholar’s progress please continue to attend parent conferences each reporting term.

In addition, our curriculum coordinators have prepared a PowerPoint presentation on the Standards-Based Report Card, designed for parents and guardians. Please click on the link below to view.

The following item was sent in by MHS teacher and Debate Coach Dana DePaul:

As a co-coach for the debate team, along with Kacy Dotoli, we have worked for the past month with the club and class members to prepare for the first debate tournament. Earlier this month, I accompanied eight MHS teams to Walpole High School to compete in the Novice Tournament. The teams that competed consist of students from all grade levels and several varsity members attended to either participate as judges or help the novice debaters.  All eight teams competed in three rounds of debate on the following topic: Resolved: In United States public K-12 schools, the probable cause standard ought to apply to searches of students. Liam Donelan and Julia Butler performed incredibly well and finished the day with a 3-0 record.  In addition, Christopher Little and Nick Villard finished with a 2-1 record.  All in all the students enjoyed their day and expressed that they felt they improved in speaking, confidence, and constructing their arguments as the day progressed.

FOOD SERVICE NEWS

The following information was sent to us by Jackie Morgan, Food Service Director:

Nutrition Information – Understanding Food Labels

In order to plan a healthy diet, we must know how to read a food label. Food labels show us if a food has a little or a lot of certain nutrients. Look on the side of a product to find the Nutrition Facts title.

You will find the serving size of the food below the nutrition facts title. Similar food products have similar serving sizes. The servings per container are also included to let you compare what you actually eat with the serving size on that product. So remember, if the serving size is 1 cup and you eat 2 cups, then you will need to double the numbers on the label. % Daily values are listed to give you an idea of how one serving of a product contributes nutritionally to a 2000 calorie diet. Use the % daily values to see if a food has a little or a lot of a nutrient. The amount of calories in one serving of the product is listed. Only a few nutrients are listed on the Nutrition Facts label-those that relate to today’s most important health issues. The label lists total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium because people eat too much of these.  Fiber, vitamins A and C, calcium and iron are listed because people do not eat enough of these every day. You should try to eat at least 100% of the daily value of each of these every day. Fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, total carbohydrate, fiber, sugars, protein, vitamins A and C, calcium and iron are required on the label. Other nutrients may be listed if the company would like to list them.

What Are Nutrients? Nutrients are substances found in food that are needed for good health. Your body can’t make nutrients, so they must be supplied by food. During digestion, food is broken down into nutrients, which are absorbed into your bloodstream and carried to every cell in your body. More than 40 nutrients in food are classified into six groups: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Each nutrient has a specific function and they all work together for your good health.

Carbohydrates – are the body’s main source of energy or calories. Carbohydrates are classified in two groups: complex carbohydrates (starches) and sugars. Fiber, which is another carbohydrate, aids digestion and helps fight some diseases but is not a nutrient because it is not digested and absorbed by the body.

Protein – supplies energy and amino acids. Amino acids are building blocks that build, repair, and maintain every cell in your body.

Fats – also supply energy but they have many other functions. Fats transport nutrients and they are a part of many body cells. Fats provide storage and insulation for your body. Carbohydrates and proteins that are not needed for energy are stored as fat.

Vitamins – trigger many different body processes. These compounds are needed in very small amounts in the diet to regulate chemical reactions in the body. Each vitamin has a specific job in your body, so one vitamin can’t replace another. Vitamins do not provide energy but they help our bodies use the energy from foods.

Minerals – are like vitamins and are used in the body to promote chemical reactions and form body structures.

Water – is a part of every cell and tissue in the body. Water carries nutrients to cells and removes wastes products. Water is also needed to help regulate body temperature. Water makes up 55-75% of your body weight.

AMBASSADOR PAGE

Student:  I would like to thank all the MPS students who volunteered and ran the Monster Dash this past weekend. This is a wonderful community event to benefit Sam’s Fund, which provides enrichment for the elementary science program. “Thanks to the generosity of the MFE and this community, our K-5 science curriculum has been enhanced by the Science from Scientists program, annual presentations from Mass Audubon and many hands-on science materials for use in the classroom. These are things that might not have been provided without Sam’s Fund,” said Bernadette Butler, MPS Elementary Science Coordinator.

Staff: I would like to recognize Genevieve Martland, who has been appointed as the school designee to the board of the Milton Library Foundation. This organization is run by hardworking volunteers, who seek to ensure that the Library continues to provide the programs and resources it needs to serve as a cultural center of the community for current and future generations of the Milton community

I would also like to give a special thank you to our six Milton Public Schools principals and two Assistant Superintendents. This past weekend, I was privileged to be invited to speak at The Parkway United Methodist Church’s Appreciation Banquet.  At this event, the leadership team of the Milton Public Schools was recognized, including Collicot Principal Holly Concannon, Cunningham Principal Jon Redden, Glover Principal Karen McDavitt, Tucker Principal Elaine McNeil Girmai, Pierce Principal Dr. Karen Spaulding and Milton High School Principal James Jette; along with Assistant Superintendents Dr. Glenn Pavlicek and Janet Sheehan. During my remarks to the 200-plus people who had gathered for this event, I called these principals “the heroes of the Milton Public Schools.”  Teachers teach, but amazing things happen in a school when there is an extraordinary principal and EXTRAORDINARY describes our current team of principals and Assistant  Superintendents.

Volunteer: Rabbi Benjamin Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills recently invited our administrative team to the new temple for a tour of the magnificent facility. We also discussed an exciting pilot the congregation is  launching. Volunteers  will be visiting our elementary schools to provide tutoring to our students. This is a unique partnership that I am excited to be part of. I would also like to add my congratulations to Andrea and Marvin Gordon and the Shoolman Family, who are are being honored by Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills this Saturday night, November 5th, for their leadership in making the temple’s vision of a new home possible.

The Milton Public School system is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the provision of quality educational programs for all students.  The Milton Public School system does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, genetic information, age or sexual orientation.
