I would like to remind our Milton Public Schools community that Teacher Appreciation Day is held on Tuesday, May 2nd, but the entire Teacher Appreciation Week lasts from Monday, May 1st to Friday, May 5th. This is the perfect time of year to write your child’s teacher a note to express your appreciation. We are very fortunate to have a team of hardworking, dedicated and talented teachers here in the Milton Public Schools. Please join me in letting them know they are valued!
I would also like to thank and welcome our two newest School Committee members. Ada Rosmarin and Elizabeth White joined the Milton School Committee at the most recent meeting on April 26th. I am looking forward to working with these two energetic and talented women!
SCHOOL COMMITTEE UPDATE
The following letter was submitted to the Milton Times by the Milton School Committee in response to a Letter to the Editor which appeared in a previous issue.
To the Editor:
Thanks to a letter to the editor from a local resident, we realized that the Average Teacher Salary chart on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website contained an error. It incorrectly indicated that the average teacher salary in Milton in 2016 was $98,286, up from $80,117 in 2015. After several conversations with DESE and with the vendor who supplies our data reporting software, we discovered the source of the error. The website incorrectly shows that the number of teachers dropped from 286 in 2015 to 240 in 2016 when in fact it had increased to 290. Taking into account the correct number of teachers, the average salary should be $81,408, which is consistent with prior years’ data. The error has been corrected with DESE and will be corrected on their website when it is next updated at the end of May.

There has been one School Committee meeting since my last E-blast. This meeting, held on April 26th, was a re-organizational meeting. Dr. Kevin Donahue was elected the Chair of the committee and Sheila Varela was elected Vice-Chair. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7 pm in the Milton TV Access studio, Room 245, Milton High School.

I am happy to report that, for the fifth year in a row, all the students (35) who took the DELF exam passed. The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française,) which is an official qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education is used for school records as well as for college and job applications. Scores are valid for life. The DELF is recognized by 180 countries. Once again, Madame Pons successfully prepared our students for this exam. Please see the list of students below:

On Thursday night, we held Milton High School Scholastic Honors Night in the Charles C. Winchester Auditorium. I was honored to be part of such a beautiful ceremony, which recognized students who were being inducted into the Century Club and the National Honor Society. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: Student screening for selection for membership in the National Honor Society begins after the first semester of the Junior year. The weighted grade point average for Grade 9, Grade 10, and Grade 11 (first semester) must be at least 3.7. Students who attain this average are invited to apply for membership. The application requires the student to detail experiences that show evidence of leadership, character, and service. The application is then read by each of the six members of the National Honor Society Faculty Advisory Board. They must decide if the student is of good character and has shown leadership and service to the school and/or community. The members must vote, by secret ballot, for admission.

We had such an exciting morning learning all about reptiles from Mr. Mack from Rainforest Reptiles. He taught us all sorts of interesting facts. He was also very silly and made us laugh a lot! The Milton Public Schools in partnership with our friends at BoomWriter are proud to offer a unique summer learning opportunity. BoomWriter will run virtual summer camps for students entering grades 3-6 taught by Milton Public Schools’ educators. Now children can participate in authentic BoomWriter projects at home over the summer. In addition to submitting daily chapter entries for voting, students will receive online lessons in writing, daily personalized feedback and a copy of the published book sent directly to their home.

The Milton Public Schools utilizes the Everyday Math Program called EM4. One of the key features of the program is the online supports that you can access at home. EM4 online has a number of resources for families including interactive reference books, online toolkits, assignment links, and tutorials. It is also a place to access games that reinforce concepts that the students are learning in school. These games are an integral part of the EM4 program and we encourage you to take advantage of your access at home. All students 1-5 have access to these features.

Boomwriter.com is another great platform that is used in many classes across the district to bolster our writing across the content areas. All of these resources are great ways to reinforce the amazing work your children are doing in school and we strongly encourage you to take advantage of our access to these at home.

On Friday, April 7th, through the generosity of Milton’s MPACE program, every fourth grade student in the Milton Public Schools traveled to Boston’s Symphony Hall where they were treated to a world class performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Milton fourth graders from the Collicot, Cunningham, Glover and Tucker Schools were introduced to Conductor Thomas Wilkens who made his entrance, jumped onto the podium box, and exclaimed, “TaDa!” with a big smile on his face. He got their attention and humorously kept it throughout the program while guiding students with musical and historical musings before each of the music selections.
The theme of this year’s concert was “Common Courtesy: Minding our Musical Manners.” Wilkens spoke about important qualities, like grace, compassion and civility and tied-in the theme with the various masterworks performed. Some of the selections included Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide,” Prokofiev’s “The Montagues and The Capulets” from Romeo and Juliet, John Williams “A Whirl Through Academe” from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and “Marion’s Theme” from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Koehne’s “Unchained Melody” and Saint-Saens Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila.
Students were accompanied by their classroom teachers and assistants, parent chaperones and elementary music teachers April Allegrezza and Colleen Martin. All agreed that it was Conductor Wilkens’ approachability and relatability to both children and the beautiful music that created a child-centered, memorable and very enjoyable student experience at Symphony Hall. Children enjoyed making close connections with the music and were able to build upon knowledge from music class.
The trip was sponsored by M-PACE, Milton’s “excise tax group,” which provides artistic and cultural enrichment for students in the Milton Public Schools.

Kindergarten is a big step in your child’s life and we would like to share some tips to help you prepare. In addition to a roundtable discussion, all participants will receive a list of children’s book titles about kindergarten, and activities to help with language, fine motor, gross motor, kindergarten readiness and self help skills. Panel members will include Beth Greenawalt, Parent Coach and founder of www.Parent-Solutions.com, Susan L. Dolan, Director of Milton Early Childhood Alliance and Marti O’Keefe McKenna, Family Outreach Liaison for the Milton Public Schools.

In my last E-Blast, I shared the news about two members of our Debate Team being invited to compete at Nationals in Kentucky. Through some diligent fundraising at Chipotle in Quincy and parent donations, there is only about $650 left to raise for this trip. The two debate team members who will be going to Nationals, Domenic Jancaterino and Aislinn O’Brien, will be attending Town Meeting at Milton High School next week to sell bottled water in the lobby. Please help to support these fantastic students.

Caitlin Clavette was a dedicated art teacher who inspired our children through her teaching and artwork. Sadly, a tragic accident took her life in February of 2016. As a community, we would like to honor her dedication and inspiration to her students.
Ms. Clavette was always so proud and excited to showcase her students’ artwork. However, our elementary schools do not have art display boards to feature students’ creativity.
We intend to honor Ms. Clavette by purchasing art display boards for each of the four Milton elementary schools. Our amazing PTOs at each elementary school are supporting this project. The art display boards cost approximately $1,000 each. Our goal is to purchase one per school for use in our schools’ lobbies, libraries and at future annual “Passport to the Arts” and other events. If you would like to join us in contributing, please send your donation by April 29, made payable to Glover PTO, who has agreed to coordinate collections for all schools.

Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, The Milton Public Schools nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Milton schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 5. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to 30 million of America’s students each school day. All across the school district, school nutrition professionals will be honored with thanks, cards, and recognition from students, school staff, parents, and the community.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes” said Jacqueline Morgan, Director of Food Services. Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.

I write to all MPS teachers to encourage you to apply to the Spring 2017 cycle for the Competitive Teacher Grants program sponsored by the Milton Foundation for Education (MFE). As you know, the mission of the MFE is to “enhance the quality of education and expand educational opportunities within the Milton Public Schools.” One of the ways we do this is through the funding of teacher grants—so we want to hear from YOU! Please consider submitting a grant proposal to our Spring Grant cycle. Guidelines are below. The due date for submissions is Thursday, May 4. Applications should be emailed to email@example.com.
Grants Program: The Milton Foundation for Education (MFE) is an independent, not-for-profit corporation, separate and distinct from the Milton Public Schools. The Foundation was established in 1995 to make possible innovative programs and opportunities that are beyond the reach of the school system’s budget. Its mission is to enhance the quality of education and expand educational opportunities within the Milton Public Schools by generating and distributing financial and other resources for such purposes.
THE COMPETITIVE GRANTS PROGRAM: This program is designed to encourage and reward innovative teaching. Qualified proposals must demonstrate a direct benefit to students and may involve an individual classroom, several classrooms and/or school-wide activities. Teachers and staff members in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve are eligible and may apply individually or in groups. For a listing of previously awarded grants, please go to our website, www.miltonfoundationforeducation.org.
GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES: All proposals must be completed electronically using the MFE Competitive Grant Application. Prior to submission, the applicants are responsible for having the application reviewed and approved by the applicable principal and department head. Submissions are due by the application deadline. No late applications will be considered. The application must demonstrate creativity and/or innovation in education, clearly state the objectives of the proposal, and discuss the method of assessing the impact of the grant. It must include a budget and sources for costs including shipping and handling.
ELIGIBLE COSTS: The MFE is guided by respect for public education and a desire to facilitate the best learning opportunities by promoting innovation, creative teaching, and curriculum enhancements that would otherwise be impossible. We welcome teacher and/or school-initiated funding opportunities that help us achieve these goals. The most important factor in determining a proposal’s eligibility for funding is the quality of the idea and its benefit to student learning. The application should clearly demonstrate that the requested materials and services are necessary to implement the proposed project.
SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY: Due to the growing presence of technology in everyday life, the MFE would like to fund “Support Technology.” We hope to fund technology and accessories that: support current equipment in the classroom, greatly enhance learning, and/or actively engage students with the lessons. All applications for technology will be passed by the district’s Director of Technology in order to ensure that equipment is compatible and equitable throughout the district. Large ticket items, such as SmartBoards, will continue to be ineligible through the Competitive Grant Program.
INELIGIBLE COSTS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Indirect and/or overhead costs either to external organizations or the Milton Public Schools.
- Workshops and other forms of faculty or staff development, or workshops for parents. We will consider a workshop for high school students if it benefits a large enough group of students and/or the educational benefit is significant.
- Transportation, travel expenses of any kind, including but not limited to meals, mileage allowances, and accommodations.
- Special Education materials that are mandated by the curriculum.
- Materials that are considered part of the schools’ infrastructure, such as textbooks, computers, SmartBoards, or furniture. (Supplementary equipment that is a necessary component for a strong proposal may be eligible.)
- Scholarships for individuals for any purpose.
- Subscriptions are not a preferred expense. However, they will be considered as part of a pilot program based on their merit and for one year only. Online subscriptions are preferred over paper subscriptions.
ALLOCATION OF GRANT MONIES: Priority will be given to proposals asking for $1,000 or less, but requests for larger amounts will be considered, especially where the benefit is to be shared among a larger group of students. The MFE attempts to achieve rough parity among the schools in awarding these grants. However, this is a competitive program. Therefore, for a variety of reasons, including the number of proposals received from each school and the funds requested, this goal is not always achievable. The maximum amount per grant may also be affected by the total amount of money available during a given cycle.
REVIEW PROCESS: Representatives for the MFE Board of Directors and one teacher from each of the six Milton Public Schools sit on the Peer Review Committee. This committee is charged with reviewing the proposals according to the MFE’s guidelines for content and cost and then makes its recommendation to the MFE’s Board of Directors, which makes all final decisions regarding the grant awards.
ANTICIPTED NUMBER OF GRANTS AWARDED PER SCHOOL: There is no preset limit to the number of grants that can be awarded to a particular school. In the past, some schools have received a single larger grant while others have received several smaller grants.
DURATION OF GRANT: Funding will expire six months from notification of the grant award. Any grant funds not spent by that time will not be available unless a request to extend the grant duration is submitted in writing and the MFE had granted said extension of time in writing. In addition, all materials purchased through an MFE grant are the property of Milton Public Schools. They must stay within the MPS if the teacher should leave the district at any time in the future. The materials may move between schools if a teacher is relocated, with permission from the original school’s principal.

MILTON SUMMER ENRICHMENT

This is the final reminder that MSE Registration has gone live on the FamilyID website (https://www.familyid.com/milton-summer-enrichment). Please note that you will need a FamilyID username and password if you do not already have one, and this can be done ahead of time if you wish.
The MSE Brochure and At a Glance document has been continuously updated to ensure we can offer the best enrichment opportunities to children. Please check it again to ensure you have the most up to date information before registering, as updates were made even today!
When registering, make sure to fill all required fields. You will also be prompted to enter the total dollar amount for the cost of your courses. Finally, please write down your course schedule and print out a receipt. The receipt should be considered confirmation of registration, unless you are contacted directly.
Courses are filled on a first come, first serve basis. As courses fill, they will be removed from the drop down menus and will no longer be available to register, even though they are still listed in this brochure. We cannot add children to courses that are full!

For those needing assistance registering, we will hold drop in registration hours on May 3, May 10, and May 17 from 3:30-5:00 in both the Tucker School Main Office and the Cunningham School Main Office, where you can register in person from courses that are still available and pay with a check.
New this year: All families will be required to physically pick up their child(ren)s schedule prior to the start of MSE from the MSE Directors. Directors will communicate pick up times once registration begins.

It is time to make our voices heard: Milton is not a town of hatred and intolerance. This Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Event! — The Milton Police Department, in collaboration with the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, is hosting a community-wide Prescription Drug Take Back event TODAY, Saturday, April 29, from 10am to 2pm as part of the DEA’s National Take-Back Day. Stop by the police station at 40 Highland Ave and drop off your used and/or expired medications. Keep excess pills out of your medicine cabinet where they can be misused, and out of our waterways. Free medication lock-boxes will be available sponsored by the BID Hospital – Milton. The event is open to the public. MILTON is a multi-media live performance that uses audio interviews, artifacts, and projected video of the sky to connect 5 towns named Milton across the United States– in NC, LA, WI, OR, and MA.
New York based, award winning theater artists PearlDamour began visiting the Miltons in 2012. In each town they talked with residents about their lives and world-views, and collaborated on projects that meaningfully address the town’s most urgent issues and interests. Now, they have made a play about what their experiences and are bringing it back to each Milton. We are the 3rd Milton the play has come to.
The show is an intimate and surprisingly funny examination of the tiny individual under our vast shared sky. Part family reunion, part night at the opera, and part poetic meditation, MILTON brings the wonder, complexity, and challenges of all 5 ‘Miltons’ into one room. It is performed by a multi-racial cast of three actors, speaking and singing their way into a shared national question: What does it mean to be an American? Does an American community actually exist?

This has been a tough week for Milton Athletics, as the majority of matches and games were postponed due to weather.
- The Boys and Girls Track Meet against Natick was postponed to a later date.
- Baseball went 1-1, after beating Natick on Thursday. Softball lost a close one in the 7th inning to Natick on Thursday.
- Boys Lacrosse has shown very well the past two weeks, improving everyday. They are starting to score more goals as well, with 4 and 6 in their past two games. Girls Lacrosse played great against a tough Framingham side on Tuesday, ultimately losing 11-9.
- The Girls Tennis Team is also showing signs of improvement, with a lot of young girls gaining valuable experience. The Boys Tennis Team has shown no sides of slowing down, beating Norwood again, 5-0, to improve their record to 5-0.
- Crew had their first race over the weekend, in which many of the boys and girls placed! Click here for their recap.
- Rugby is now 3-0 with a convincing win over Catholic Memorial on Thursday.

Senior Captains Joanna Needham (Girls Basketball) and Ethan Walko (Boys Basketball) were both named to the MBCA All Academic Team! They will be honored at Holy Cross on Sunday, May 7th! Congratulations to both of them for this great achievement!
