Re: E-blast Update
Date: Friday, October 13th, 2017

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

The next few weeks are going to be very busy ones for the Milton Public Schools. We have a variety of events on the calendar, but I want to be sure that the entire community knows about two events in particular.

First, we have a very exciting event that was put together as part of a hurricane relief effort. Our talented music students in Grades 9-12 will be performing onstage at the Charles C. Winchester auditorium on October 17th.  Tickets to this event are $10 and all proceeds will benefit the victims of the recent hurricanes. Local singer Pauline Wells has also volunteered to be part of this effort and will perform that evening. Student artwork will be on sale at this event, also to benefit the victims.  To view some of the student artwork (including these Glover-student-created pins)   that will be for sale, please scroll to the end of the E-blast.wildcat pin

DATE: Tuesday, October 17th
TIME: 7pm
LOCATION: Charles C. Winchester Auditorium, Milton High School

Secondly, I would encourage all parents/guardians to attend Thursday night’s free PARENT Speaker Series, featuring Maria Trozzi. The topic is “Finding Resilience Strategies to Promote Competent and Confident Children.”  Parents of young children and adolescents often worry that if they are not doing everything as parents, they are doing nothing. Ms. Trozzi talks about what is really important and offers evidence-based strategies to produce competent and confident children, able to successfully navigate a complicated world.

The PARENT series (Promoting Awareness and Resources for the Emotional Nurturing of Teens) is a collaboration between the Milton Public Schools and The Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. It is made possible with generous financial support from The Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, the Isabel Joyce Piliavin Charitable Trust, Milton SEPAC and the Milton PTOs.

DATE: Thursday, October 19th
TIME: 7 – 9 pm
LOCATION: Charles C. Winchester Auditorium, Milton High School

The committee voted approval of Vendor Warrants, and received updates from the Health and Wellness Subcommittee and the Strategic Planning Advisory Subcommittee. As part of the Policy Subcommittee Report, the committee approved three policies.  The chair then adjourned the meeting to executive session.

The next meeting will be held October 25th at 7 pm in the Milton TV Access studio, Room 245, Milton High School.

CURRICULUM NEWS

The following item was submitted by Health/PE Director Noel R. Vigue, M.Ed., CSCS:

What an amazing day!  Fitness, friends, fun and nutrition-all at Gillette Stadium during the New England Revolution’s 4th grade Fitness Program.  Our 4th grade students from all four elementary schools participated in a variety of fitness activities led by Revolution staff promoting lifelong wellness and physical activity.  Students were smiling ear to ear as they were able to run, jump, roll and skip on the turf where the Revs and Patriots players compete.  After completing the exercise portion of the program, students re-hydrated and made their way to their front row seats.  They were then treated to two of the Revs players, defenders Joshua Smith and London Woodberry, who shared the importance of healthy eating and proper hydration.  Then four students were randomly chosen to ask the players their question regarding training, fitness, and/or eating habits.  There were 12 schools with approximately 800 total students participating and two Milton students, Korbyn Edwards (Glover) and Cole Belcher (Collicot) were lucky enough to have their names called!  Hopefully this experience will resonate for years to come and help reinforce making healthy choices.  Thank you to all four elementary school PTOs for their support!  Reminder to all 4th grade participating  students’ families, your child received a NE Revolution game ticket to this Sunday’s October 15 home game (@5pm).  Parents can access the student ticket and purchase companion tickets here.

Please read the following letter regarding Grade 5 Science from Scientists Program:

As many of you know, for the past four years, our fifth graders have been fortunate to be able to work with Science from Scientists. This program has been sending two charismatic scientists into our classrooms to lead lab-style science classes (which are standards-based, hands-on, and fun) bi-weekly for the entire academic year.  These scientists provide all necessary equipment and materials while the classroom teachers help as active participants.  Not only do students benefit from having actual scientists in their classroom as science role models, the teachers grow as professionals from being afforded the opportunity to work with these real-life scientists consistently.

The cost of this program has grown to $60,000 for a full year. Last year, funds came from the Milton Public Schools, the Milton Foundation for Education; various grant sources (including the PPG Aerospace Foundation and Raytheon), donations from community members, and our Chip in Fore Science Golf Tournament.  This cost has become unsustainable annually, and in an effort to keep this valuable program going in our schools, we have negotiated with Science from Scientists to create a half-year program for us.  Therefore, during the 2017-2018 school year, Science from Scientists will come to our elementary schools bi-weekly for half of the academic school year (December – May).

The funding for this year’s half-year program, which is $30,000, will come from the Milton Public Schools ($10,000), the Milton Foundation for Education ($10,000), Science from Scientists ($7500), and other grant sources.

Math Classes in Grades 6-12 Participate in Global Math Week 2017

Being confident about mathematics opens doors for students and paves the way for success in their chosen careers. Yet many students have negative perceptions about mathematics.  We are trying to change negative perceptions of math by having teachers across grades 6-12 participate in Global Math Week 2017.

math pic1

Global Math Week 2017 has a goal of engaging one million students around the world in learning about and discussing the same interactive mathematics topic together. From October 10-17 and students will be devoting some class time to math instruction in the Global Math Week topic, Exploding Dots™.  The topic is an extraordinary gateway to remarkable connections between elementary mathematics and topics in algebra, calculus, and beyond.  Imagine the impact on our students of participating in this special event that illustrates the relevance and universality of mathematics.

Welcome to our Elementary Math Instructional Coaches!

As a result of the town override in June, we were able to add two elementary mathematics instructional coaches to provide in-house teacher development and support in mathematics pedagogy. Our new math instructional coaches, Maura Middleton (math coach, grades K-2) and Mary Shapiro (math coach, grades 3-5) have been have been busy at work in our four elementary schools.  The coaches work primarily with teachers, either on an individual basis or with teams, on job-embedded professional development.  Their goal is to support teachers’ professional practice with the aim of increasing students learning in mathematics.  Both coaches are veteran educators with an in-depth knowledge of mathematics and mathematics pedagogy.  The math coaches engage in consulting, collaborating with and coaching teachers in order to:

  • Design mathematics instruction that emphasizes the interconnectedness of mathematical concepts;
  • Help teachers understand the developmental progressions of mathematical concepts and how the progressions relate to curriculum and instruction;
  • Provide resources (e.g., manipulatives, technology) and mathematical background knowledge to teachers;
  • Meet the needs of the teachers in order to work together toward a common goal around student learning and achievement; and
  • Work alongside the teacher, co-teaching, collecting data about learning, implementing specific strategies, and/or recording data about teaching practices.

We are very lucky to have these two veteran educators work with our teachers!

The following REACH for Reading Parent Resources were submitted by our Elementary Curriculum Coordinators:

Have you signed on to the online component of REACH at home?

If they haven’t already, students in grades K-5 will receive their REACH online log-ins and passwords from teachers.  They can log in here by clicking on “For Students.”  Once they are signed in, there are multiple activities they can engage with at home!

Through this online launchpad, students have access to the classroom anthology, word builders, games, and videos.  The classroom anthology or student book, contains the story of the week.  Parents have the opportunity to share the story with their children and engage in discussion in a literacy context.  There is also a feature that will read the text aloud to students.  This is a great model for students of all ages of fluency.

Another great way for parents to support their learners at home is through the word builder, videos, vocabulary, and online games.  Parents can review the vocabulary words of the week and students can share what they have been learning, watch National Geographic videos related to their unit of study, and play online games.  These online games give students the opportunity to practice concepts they are learning at school during evening homework routines.  There are even specialized games that target vocabulary and phonics sounds which is a great resource that targets students specific needs in grades K-5!

Have you read the parent newsletter?

Family newsletters are also available for all REACH units.  These letters are similar to the ones provided by Everday Math.  Parents may have received a paper copy of this or it is available online under the resources tab.

The family newsletter has many resources and activities for families.  It also includes the big focus question that serves as the introduction and culmination of the unit.  Additionally, the family newsletter includes the new words that will be introduced during the unit.

The following feedback was given by 5th grade parents at Glover – “A great opportunity to bring the classroom home!”  “The family newsletter was a great conversation starter!”

Are you ready for a challenge?

If you find your student is ready for a challenge, REACH for Reading provides additional resources!  Check out the complex text under the resource tab.  There is one complex text available for each unit.  This challenging, yet valuable, resource is an above level passage with higher level thinking questions that follow.  The passage is related to the guiding question of the unit and will pose some high interest questions that prompt discussion.

PAC/SPECIAL ED NEWS

The following item was submitted by Tracy Grandeau, Director of Pupil Personnel Services:

The Milton Public School District is very fortunate to have many staff resources to support our teachers and students. This year, as a result of last year’s successful override, we are pleased to have two Inclusion Specialists in our district!   The Inclusion Specialists’ positions were designed as a district-wide service for staff with the aim of increasing students’ access to the curriculum and engagement in the classroom. On a daily basis, the Inclusion Specialists consult with staff regarding plans to increase student involvement in the classroom environment. They also are valued members of the Inclusion Task Force.

Dr. Maureen Butler is our Elementary Inclusion Specialist.   She has been with the Milton Public Schools for eight years. Maureen has eighteen years of experience in working as a pediatric occupational therapist in a variety of settings.  Her experience includes both public and private schools as well as early intervention and a sensory integration clinic. Maureen recently earned her doctorate in occupational therapy with a specialty in pediatrics from The Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She has held specialty certification in sensory processing since 2008.

Dawn Durant is our new Secondary Inclusion Specialist. This is her first year working with the Milton Public Schools. However, Dawn has a wealth of experience both as a special educator and as a Facilitator of Resources/ ESL Team with the Boston Public Schools. Dawn has earned a Master’s Degree in the field of education and a CAGS in School Leadership.

In their new roles as Inclusion Specialists, Maureen and Dawn focus on supporting staff through frequent consultation to ensure successful and meaningful inclusive opportunities in the school setting. They regularly meet with teachers, service providers, paraprofessionals and administrators as well as conduct observations. Our Inclusion Specialists make recommendations regarding environmental adaptations, accommodations, sensory strategies and techniques to improve executive functioning skills.  Often Maureen and Dawn collaborate with the school teams to develop plans that emphasize talent and expertise of the district’s numerous resources.  We are lucky to have such amazing resources!

SEL NEWS

The following item was submitted by Laurie Stillman, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Facilitator:

Dispose of your expired, unwanted, or unused medications! National Prescription Drug TAKE BACK DAY at Milton Police Department from 10am to 2pm on October 28th.

With drug addiction now an epidemic affecting a wide swath of Americans, it is up to us to educate ourselves about how to protect our kids from abusing addictive medications that are in our own medicine cabinets. Many people who become dependent on these medications get their first dose as teens from trying medications prescribed to other people.

Because adolescents like to experiment with getting high, it’s important to monitor your potentially dangerous medications and to keep them locked up for safekeeping. These include pain relievers, cough medicines, narcotics and stimulants. Parents, grandparents and other relatives should all take part.

To reduce access to these drugs even further, dispose of those medications which are unwanted, unused or expired (because even expired meds retain some potency). Don’t throw them in the trash or flush them down the toilet, because they have harmful environmental effects on the land and water.

Instead, take them to Milton Police Department where there is a 24 hour anonymous drug disposal kiosk for pills, patches and tubes of medicines. They will have them properly disposed at no cost to you.  Or come down to the Police Department on October 28th from 10am-2pm.  We will make it as easy for you as possible!

Facts about Prescription Drugs

A survey of teenagers by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that:

  • 1 in 5 teens has tried Vicodin®, a powerful and addictive narcotic pain reliever
  • 1 in 10 has tried OxyContin® (Oxycodone) another prescription narcotic
  • 1 in 10 has used the stimulants Ritalin® or Adderall® for nonmedical purposes
  • 1 in 11 teens has admitted to getting high on cough medicine

You do have the power to influence your child’s decision about whether or not to use prescription and over the counter (OTC) drugs for recreation. Research says that fear of upsetting parents is the number one reason why kids do not use drugs. Talk to your kids and don’t make it easy for them to fall to temptation.

Come to National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday October 28th from 10-2 at Milton Police Station.  Sponsored by the Milton Police Department with support from the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.

FOOD SERVICE

The following item was sent to us by Jackie Morgan, Food Service Director:

Milton Schools is participating once again in the Farm to School Program and the Harvest of the Month campaign. This will be our eighth year having farm fresh produce on our menus.

Mass. Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month campaign promotes a different Massachusetts-grown food each month in K-12 cafeterias across the state. The program’s goal is to encourage healthy food choices by increasing students’ exposure to seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers and building excitement about school meals.

Featured local foods for 2017-2018: September – Tomatoes October – Pears November – Kale December – Carrots January – Apples February – Butternut Squash March – Dairy April – Potatoes May –Seafood June – Strawberries

Harvest of the Month is a great opportunity to celebrate local abundance, experiment with new foods and recipes, and get some positive recognition for your school. We want to help you to continue to lead the way in making farm-fresh foods available to students and staff whenever possible. Your school cafeteria now has posters hung on the walls to showcase our monthly selections.

Buying local also provides wonderful opportunities for school food and nutrition staff, educators, school administrators, family members, and students to collaborate and to celebrate our commitment to serving locally grown foods with the community.

Purchasing locally grown food is a great way to encourage students to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and it also supports local farms. Buying local products in season is often very affordable. Food service directors who have introduced local foods programs often report increased meal participation and decreased wastage.

The following update was submitted by Ryan Madden, Athletic Director:

The Football Team handled Wellesley last Friday, with a commanding 35-6 victory under the lights. They take on Walpole tonight, Friday, Oct 13th at 7pm under the lights at Brooks Field. $5 tickets for students and adults.

It is MHS Best Buddies Night! All Best Buddies Members will be at the game on Friday to support their Wildcats. They will be part of the pregame ceremony and will be holding a 50/50 raffle! This is also senior night, so all football, cheer, and band seniors will be honored. Football and cheer seniors will be honored prior to the kick-off, with the band seniors honored at half-time.

Please no dropping off students at the gate. We will not admit children under the age of 11 if they are not accompanied by an adult. There will be no re-entry. Once you leave the stadium, you will need to buy another ticket to re-enter. Students are also encouraged to leave all bags in cars or their lockers. We also ask that you refrain from parking along the grass hill near the gate. There is plenty of parking in the back lots and the front lot of the high school. Our Booster’s Program will be selling food and drinks out of the snack shack, as well as plenty of Merchandise at the entrance.  Roll ‘Cats!

The Girls Soccer Team fell to Wellesley last night in their Breast Cancer Awareness Game.  It was a great game, with Diani scoring the tying goal before Wellesley eventual grabbed the winner.  They take on Norton today at 3:45 on the turf field.

The Boys Soccer Team has recorded a tie against D1 Xaverian on Saturday, extending their unbeaten streak against the Catholic Conference to 6 games in 3 years! They will take on Wellesley at Babson College tonight, Friday Oct 13th at 7pm.

The Volleyball Team was finally taken down after an impressive string of wins.  Walpole came out victors in a hard fought battle winning in 5 sets, with Walpole narrowly beating the Wildcats after a tough 5th set.  Their Marblehead match tonight has been postponed to later in the month.

The Field Hockey Team has been playing extremely well, just struggling to find the net.  Their defense has improved immensely over the course of the season and they will look to beat Wellesley today at Sprague Field, 3:45pm.

The Swim Team recorded their first and second wins ever as a Varsity Sport last week, beating both Weymouth and Norwood!  They added more state qualifying times and are enjoying their change of season!

Students: I would like to congratulate Pierce Middle School student Sadie Leggett. Sadie is one of only eight students (see photo below) picked from the Boston City Singers’ tour choir to sing with Kristin Chenoweth at the Home Bases’s Mission Gratitude fundraiser dinner earlier this month. Home Base’s Mission gratitude raises money to help support veterans and their families.  Here is the website for the event

Staff:   I would like to thank our Town Administrator, Michael Dennehy (father of five MPS students) for his recent efforts with our third-graders. Mr. Dennehy personally visited third-grade classrooms to promote the Massachusetts Municipal Association’s (MMA) poster contest. This collaboration of art teachers and classroom teachers aims to raise public awareness, promote the attributes of good local government, and encourage future leaders of Massachusetts to take an active interest in their community activities.  After creating a poster in visual art classes depicting a program of their local government, students will be encouraged to enter the contest.  Submissions are needed by November 1st and can be sent to their classroom teacher. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first ($250), second ($100), and third ($50) place winners! After his visit, Mr. Dennehy wrote, “How refreshing and uplifting it was to be the guest at each of your wonderful sanctuaries of learning, nurturing and pure innocence.” We are grateful to Mr. Dennehy for his time and energy. Volunteers: I would like to thank Sunni Fleming, an MPS parent who recently organized a supply drive for the Jared Box Toy Drive. Ms. Fleming collected and sorted hundreds of donations, given by MPS families. The Jared Box Project is intended to lift the spirits of children in the hospital. The boxes symbolize the importance of play and are filled with well wishes, hope, and love. Many thanks for Ms. Fleming, as well as to all of those who donated.
