Grade One Assignment Procedure

The following is the procedure for assigning students to an Elementary program for Grade 1 in the Milton Public Schools.  Click here to view the School Committee Policy on Grade One Assignment.

Grade One Assignment Procedure

For students attending Kindergarten in the Milton Public Schools as of March 1, 2013.

1. Determine the level of interest in the grade 1 English and French programs by having parents/guardians fill out a program selection form.  These forms will be sent out as of February 13, 2013 and should be returned to the student’s school office no later than March 1, 2013.

2. Determine the number of grade one English and French Immersion sections in each school.  The number of sections of grade one at a school will equal the total number of Kindergarten sessions at that school from the previous year.   (E.g. 4 sessions of Kindergarten at Collicot for the 2012-13 school year will translate into 4 sessions of Grade 1 at Collicot for the 2013-14 school year).  This format will allow all students to remain in the same school for the duration of their elementary (K-5) career.

For the 2013-14 school year the breakdown of sections of grade one English and French Immersion will be based on the following format:

4 sections at Collicot – Minimum of 2 English; Max of 2 French
4 sections at Cunningham – Minimum of 2 English; Max of 2 French*
4 sections at Glover – Minimum of 2 English (including 1 co-taught); Max of 2 French
3 sections Tucker – Minimum of 2 English; Max of 1 French

After receiving the program selection forms from families, the Superintendent will determine both the number of sections of  English or French at each school as well as the class size maximum for the sections of English and French at each school based on the needs of the district.

*Typically there are 3 sessions of Kindergarten at the Cunningham School, however, there are 4 session of Kindergarten at the Cunningham for the 2012-13 school year.  This means that there will be 4 sessions of grade one at Cunningham for the 2013-14 school year.

3. Assign students to a program.  Students who select the English program will be assigned to the English program at their school.  Students who select the French Immersion program will be assigned to the French Immersion program at their school if enough seats exist.  In the event that there are not enough seats in the French Immersion program at a school to meet the demand, a school based lottery will be held in order to determine a placement order to fill the open seats at that school.  Students with siblings in other grades will not have priority for assignment to a program.

If necessary, the school based lotteries will be held the week of March 4-8, 2013.  The school based lotteries will be conducted by the Central Office using a computer generated random number process.  Results of the school based lotteries will be communicated on an individual basis.  Multiples (twins, triplets, etc..) will enter the lotteries as a single entry.

Students who are not selected to participate in the French Immersion program will be assigned to the English program at their school and be placed on a wait-list for French Immersion.

4. Wait-lists for open seats for all school based lotteries will remain in effect until the tenth day of school and open seats in a particular school will be filled via this wait-list.  If a school has an open seat in their French Immersion program (after placing all of their current MPS Kindergarten students) those seats will be filled by current MPS Kindergarten students from other schools in the district.  In order to fill these seats, a district-wide lottery will be held for the students on school based wait-lists.

Students who register for Kindergarten after March 1st

Students who register for kindergarten after March 1, 2013 will be assigned to a school via the Elementary Student Assignment Plan.  Entrance to the French Immersion program at their school will only be possible if all students attending Kindergarten in the MPS as of March 1st have been placed in the program of their choice and all wait-lists have been exhausted.  If necessary, school based lotteries will be implemented to fill any open seats.

Students new to Grade 1

Students new to Grade 1 in the MPS will be assigned to a school via the Elementary Student Assignment Plan.  Entrance to the French Immersion program at their school will only be possible if all students attending Kindergarten in the MPS have been placed in the program of their choice and all wait-lists have been exhausted.  If necessary, school based lotteries will be implemented to fill any open seats.
