As I send this, there is one day left in the 2017-18 school year. I hope that your family has had a successful school year and is looking forward to summer. Summer vacation is a time to recharge, relax and enjoy family and friends and I’m sure many are looking forward to a break from the school routine. 9 weeks out of school is a lot of vacation time and with just a bit of effort on the part of families, students can return to school refreshed and ready to learn.
Below you’ll find summer reading and math guidelines for each grade level as well as some MPS community favorite books to share with adult readers. Thank you to our librarians and curriculum coordinators for their work on summer requirements and guidelines.
Summer Reading Challenge 2018
Every year the Milton Public Schools create a summer program to challenge students and foster a love of reading. Research has shown that reading builds empathy and knowledge, reduces stress, improves memory, focus, vocabulary and critical thinking skills. Don’t wait until the end of summer to benefit from the wonders of reading!
MHS librarian JT Troy shares that MHS students have the opportunity to read a free choice book as part of the reading requirement and encourages students to ask for recommendations, branch out and read a new genre and make reading an enjoyable daily habit. Audiobooks, ebooks and print books are available at your local library. There are also many websites that offer book recommendations such as Good Reads and the YALSA Book Finder. MHS students can find all summer requirements here.
Pierce Middle School believes that the summer reading program not only ensures a smooth transition to the next academic year, but also fosters a love of reading that will continue on beyond middle school. PMS librarian Jess Royster writes that this year’s summer reading focuses on issues such as social conflict, diversity of experience and situation, and acceptance. All Pierce students must read a minimum of four books: three free choice books and one required text. Book choices and assignments can be found here.
Elementary librarian Josh Coben declares – Let the summer reading begin! Milton’s elementary schools are once again partnering with the Milton Public Library for our summer reading challenge. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” K-5 library classes learned how they can have fun, become stronger readers, and beat the “summer slide” by reading all summer. Teachers sent home a registration form directing students to create a summer reading account. From June 22-August 29, students can log their reading minutes and the library events they attend, winning prizes along the way. We’re looking for 100% participation, so if your child has not yet done so, please be sure that they create an account and return the bottom section of the registration form to their teacher. SCHOOL COMMITTEE UPDATE
It was a terrific evening at MHS last week as the School Committee and MPS administrators honored the many volunteers who contribute their time and talents to the Milton Public Schools. The success of our school system is directly related to the enthusiasm of our volunteers!
The School Committee recently updated the calendar for the 2018-19 school year. The 2018-19 calendar can be found here.
For the upcoming school year, we will be rolling over ridership from the previous year. If you currently have students registered for the bus, you will need only to send payment (for a paid bus ride) or an email indicating you want to renew your ride (for free rides). Payment and email must be received by June 30th.
If you need to register a new student for the bus, details are here. Bus payment and registration (if needed) must be received by June 30th. Please refer to this link for all details and email Jane Barrett with questions.
Anyone who does not register by June 30 will not be guaranteed a seat. Even if your child is entitled to free transportation because he or she is in grades K-6 and you live more than two miles from school, you must let us know by June 30 that you wish to use bus transportation.
In the Spring of 2015, the Milton School Committee passed a Residency Policy that states “students who are enrolled in the Milton Public Schools shall be required to re-establish residency prior to entering grades six and nine as well as Milton Public School students who attend school out-of-town*.”
Families who have students in these categories are required to complete the form that will be mailed to their homes (form is also available here ) and provide all necessary documentation. This process, now in its 4th year, is one of the safeguards used by MPS to ensure that all students enrolled in our schools are residents of the town of Milton. Although the re-registration process may be an inconvenience for some families, we hope that residents understand that this is a valuable tool to protect taxpayers in the town of Milton. We work year-round on residency issues and this is simply one more method to assist us with ensuring residency compliance.
Ms. Sarina Burke, MPS Residency Coordinator, will be working morning and evening hours all summer to better meet the needs of parents/guardians schedules. The summer hours for reestablishment starting July 9th are Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7 -10am and Tuesday evenings from 4-8pm or by appointment. *This includes all students who attend Blue Hills Regional Technical School, Norfolk County Agricultural High School and Special Education out-of-district placements for students entering grades 6 and 9.
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Each year Milton High nominates three junior boys and three junior girls to attend the Boys and Girls State programs at Stonehill College in June. As participants, the students stay on a college campus for a week with hundreds of other students from Massachusetts and learn how the democratic process works first hand.
The students who were chosen to participate will act as citizens and will participate at all levels of a mock-government that they must create from scratch through the process of campaigning, speeches, and elections. Every day, the students will also take elective courses that particularly interest them about government, economics, or the law. The program is sponsored and organized by the American Legion and we are very happy to have these young people learn more about the democratic process through these hands on experiences.
For those who have not already responded, we ask all 8th -11th grade families to declare whether or not your student(s) will be able to bring their own device next year. Please complete this short declaration survey as soon as possible, if you have not already.
If your student will be loaning a Chromebook, please make arrangements for your student to bring their signed Chromebook Loan Agreement to pick up their Chromebook in the MHS Auditorium during one of the following times: August 20 – 1-3 pm, August 21 – 7-9:30 am, August 22 – 11-1 pm and August 27 – 3-5 pm.

The Milton High Guidance Department and Karen Cahill share the following. Current juniors – this is your last chance to register for October 10th, SAT at Milton High School! On Wednesday, October 10th you will have the opportunity to take the SATs at Milton High School during the school day. This is a new opportunity offered by College Board for the upcoming school year. We are asking any rising seniors taking the SATs on October 10th to be at school at 7:30am for registration. Testing will begin promptly at 8am. Students will have the option of taking the SAT with or without Essay and testing will end by 12:30pm. Once testing is concluded students will follow their regular school day schedule until dismissal. This is the same day our sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSATs, which will begin at 8am. Taking SATs on this day is not mandatory but we are hoping seniors will take advantage of this new school day testing option.
You WILL NOT register for this School Day testing on the College Board website; you will register with UNIBANK through the MPS website – go to the UNIBANK icon. Registration is open now but will close TOMORROW, June 22nd as materials have to be ordered by June 25th. Once registration is closed there will be no opportunity to register, so please sign up ASAP if you want to take the test on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018. The MHS Guidance Department will be closed for the summer starting Wednesday, June 27th and will re-open on Monday, August 27th. Please contact Maureen Kennedy or Brad Spindle in the MHS main office via email or phone (617- 696-4470 ext. 0).
Updated GPAs will be available in the fall once all summer school grades are submitted and recorded. Schedules will be given out to students on the first day of school Wednesday, August 29th during homeroom. A “welcome letter” with homeroom assignments will be mailed home in late August. Please remember, changes in class schedules are discouraged. A change request made due to poor attendance, tardiness, inadequate class participation, failure to do homework or lack of effort will not be approved. Understand that changing one course often results in the need to change a student’s entire schedule and even if a teacher approves a change, there may not be course offerings available. Please follow the MHS chain of command to initiate all schedule changes which states that the student/parent/guardian first contacts the teacher, who contacts the guidance counselor.
Freshman and all other students new to MHS will receive their schedules at The New Student Orientation, which will be Monday, August 27th at MHS. More details on this event to follow. All incoming freshman can start their community service this summer! Don’t wait until September!
Enrollment in an AP course requires the student to complete prerequisite courses and mandatory summer work. Summer work was assigned to all AP students at the mandatory AP information sessions held between May 29- June 8. Failure to complete summer work may result in a student being dropped from the AP class. Please remind your student to complete their work.
Rising seniors – Please consider writing your college essay, update your activities list, complete your community service hours, do some college research (size, cost, location, specific major, etc.) and possibly visit some of the colleges/universities that you are interested in. Be safe and enjoy the summer!
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
I want to send my congratulations to the 7th grade teachers and students for their recent outstanding performances in the team Model United Nations simulations which took place over three days at Pierce. Pierce Humanities Curriculum Coordinator Nancy Warn shared that it was amazing to see so many 7th graders transition to global diplomats, as they attempted to tackle the problems of worldwide access to clean water. Students engaged in research on the situation in their assigned countries, as well as topic analysis to potentially discover solutions to the issue of clean water access around the world. Students gave opening speeches, negotiated with fellow delegates and wrote and/or sponsored resolutions to filter water, improve infrastructure as to improve access for remote regions and encourage countries with resources and little need to help those without resources and great need. It was truly impressive.
Thank you to the 7th grade social studies teachers – for their engagement in this unit of study, their attention to preparation and their work with the students in preparing, as well as throughout the simulation and thank you to all the team teachers for lending support. This great learning opportunity would not have been possible without a great team Pierce effort, and it is appreciated.
Pierce students in Mr. Romeo’s Rocket Club enjoyed launch day last week at Kelly Field. Plenty of rocket success for this group of budding engineers! Check out these videos of rocket success!
INSIDE OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
You’ve all likely been inspired by TEDTalks and this spring our 3rd-5th grade students had the chance to create their own! Students learned how to exercise their voices and choices by joining a network of TED-Ed Clubs being formed in schools all over the world. Students created their own TED Talks while working on important skills including storytelling, best practices for camera, lighting, and sound, how to create great visuals, and presentation literacy skills. Cunningham held their end of year presentations this week to rave reviews. Students choose topics including optical illusion, woman’s rights, gender equality, rules around sports, global warming, self confidence/believing in yourself, the problem with gaming and “fads”, dream jobs, the benefits of recess and sports injuries. We look forward to Ted-Ed clubs continuing in the fall.
Our 5th graders at all of our schools have enjoyed some whirlwind days as they get ready to step up to 6th grade! There have been Step Up days, 5th grade Field Days, trips to Pierce, the State House, tours of Milton and more!
There were two more successful JA in a Day programs at Glover and Tucker in the past few weeks. Glover would like to thank Jimmy Suppelsa and the countless classroom volunteers who make this day possible for our students! Please enjoy this video of Glover JA in a Day.
Teachers Mary Beth Callahan and Kelly Griffin shared that the Blue Hills Campus full-day preschool class participated in the Tucker School JA for a Day. The Lesson was called A Penny Shared and the preschool students planned their project – Lemonade for Animals.
This lesson involved the importance of giving as well as how to organize a chronological sequence of events.Through class discussion and reflection the students created the idea to offer the proceeds from a super exciting lemonade sale to the animals that live at the Milton Animal Shelter. This week they held the fundraiser at the end of the school day and it was a huge success! The lemonade was delicious and the students raised $103.00! Milton Animal Control Officer Nancy Bersani came to visit the next day and the students offered her the donation. Thank you to all of the Tucker families that contributed to this project!
Collicot and Cunningham recently had their 8th annual joint 1st grade French Language Celebration. Parents/guardians and students enjoyed the activities and it was a great success. Thank you to our 1st grade French teachers and parent volunteers who organize such a fun day for our students.
We are getting ready to welcome a new kindergarten and preschool class to MPS in the fall. Each of our schools welcomed our youngest students this week for tours so students could gain familiarity with with their new schools. We look forward to seeing our K and preschool students on the 1st day of school for kindergarten and preschool – Tuesday, September 4th.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
This week I received a letter about the rise of vaping and concerns for our students from the Attorney General which I share with you here. We at MPS share these concerns and are actively working to help manage this growing health concern for young people. I refer you to the resources the Attorney General shared as well as these notes from the recent community forum held at MPS – The Truth about Vaping.
FOOD AND NUTRITION
There is a terrific opportunity for part time jobs in our food services department. We are hiring for substitute positions at all schools. You’ll be serving healthy food to kids and be home when your kids are home due to the school schedule – what’s better than that?! This can be a great opportunity for parents and retirees and food service experience is a plus, but not required. The starting pay for the food service substitute position pays $15.05 per hour. Last week the Food Service Department at MHS hosted a taste test with General Mills to introduce three new flavors of Yogurt Coolers, a new breakfast drink that puts a healthy spin on traditional coffee shop drinks. The flavors sampled were Cocoa Coffee, Brown Sugar Cinnamon, and Orange Crème. All of the drinks contain their own natural ingredients such as cocoa powder, cinnamon, or orange juice, and are made with a milk and yogurt base.
The team at General Mills supplied the ingredients and came prepared with “Swag Bags” for the students. Any student who sampled a drink was asked to rate the flavor on the sticker chart, and three lucky students won a Swag Bag which contained fun gifts and samples. The sampling was done throughout all three lunches, and a lot of students stopped by the table to show their interest. A number of students asked the ingredients and were pleased to find out that the drinks were all natural yogurt drinks, containing no additional syrups or artificial sweeteners. The Cocoa Coffee was an overwhelming hit, and the Brown Sugar Cinnamon was a close second. MHS is excited to bring these products to the Breakfast Program and serve it as part of a complete, nutritious breakfast.
The Milton Public Schools is pleased to support the Wait Until 8th initiative. Did you know that the average age a child gets a smartphone is 10 years old and that children are spending between 6 and 9 hours a day on media? Childhood is changing, and the negative impact of too much screen time is hitting kids hard. We have good news for you though. There is a wonderful resource to help families delay the smartphone and give their children more time smartphone free. MPS Director of Technology AJ Melanson shared the details with the School Committee in this presentation.
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers families to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and families alike over the kids having a smartphone. Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge. The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
A pledge becomes “active” once 10 or more families from a grade at a school sign. The organizers designed the pledge this way so you don’t have to fear “what if I am the only family that signs this in my kid’s grade.” This takes the pressure off because the pledge only kicks in once at least 10 families sign from your grade. When taking the pledge please use the following names for each school: Collicot Elementary School, Cunningham Elementary School, Glover Elementary School, Pierce Middle School, Tucker Elementary School. More than 8,000 families from all 50 states have said yes to waiting for the smartphone. Will you join us? Childhood is too short to waste on a smartphone. Let’s let kids be kids a little longer. This fall we’ll see Parachutes for Physics, Living Things terrariums, flexible seating, art supplies and more in our classrooms thanks to the MFE and their support of the Milton Public Schools!

This summer the Milton Art Center is offering nine weeks of summer classes with separate morning and afternoon summer art class sessions for children, ages 5-12, and Summer Studio for teens, 12-17, who enjoy bringing their ideas and stories to life. Sign up now!
Come visit the Forbes House the weekend of Milton Music Fest, June 23rd and 24th! We’ll have a table with activities and information set up in Governor Hutchinson’s Field on Saturday and on Sunday we’re holding an Open House from 12 noon – 3 pm with free tours of the museum. This summer, the Forbes House Museum will be offering themed tours with activities appropriate for elementary school children and above, and French language tours for students in the immersion program. If you are interested, please email The Forbes House with the ages of your children and your preferred days (M-F) and times. We will use that information to establish a schedule for the summer and let you know the options by early July.
Mike’s 5K to Crush Substance Abuse, a walk/run scheduled on October 20th at Cunningham School, is open for registration. Last year there were over 600 participants and this year we’re hoping for 800! Proceeds help to support Milton activities to prevent substance abuse and addiction. Please consider sponsoring the race, or registering as an individual or as a group. It would be great to see many MPS students participate!
MILTON MUSIC FEST AND FIREWORKS
The Milton Music Festival returns to Gov. Hutchinson’s Field a top of Milton Hill on Adams Street on June 23rd and 24th. On Saturday night, sit and enjoy the splendid view of Boston as our top-notch line up of musicians fill the airwaves with some of your favorite tunes. We will have nearly FIVE hours of nonstop music. This year we will have a “Little Bit of Country and a Little Bit of Rock and Roll”. Be sure to wear your cowboy hats and boots! There will also be a large open air dance floor waiting for you.
The kids will enjoy the HUGE sand box and ride our GIANT slide. Try your hand at corn hole and volleyball, and enjoy the Wahlburgers Truck, Montilio’s Pizza Cart and The OK Saloon’s cold draft beer and wine as well as ice cream, fried dough and more!
When the sky darkens and the lights twinkle in the distance, right around 10pm, the fireworks will light up the night with the Boston skyline as your backdrop. This celebration is always an evening to treasure. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs, blankets and bug spray!
The fun continues on Sunday with Celtic Sunday from 1-9 PM. Celtic Sunday 2018 will highlight many of Boston’s best Irish bands, musicians and vocalists. Each of them brings so much talent to the Boston Irish Music scene. Our friends from M.J. O’Connor’s Irish Pub will be serving Guinness, Magners and other ice cold beer and wine. Grab your chair and sunscreen, there will be something for everyone, young and old. There will also be handicap parking available at the field on Sunday only. ART AND MUSIC NEWS
On June 13th, Milton High School hosted the annual Elementary ACE Art Show. ACE is a grade 5 enrichment program that provides opportunities for students to explore visual arts using advanced media and techniques. Over 100 families passed through the exhibit!
This past Monday was our first Applied Instrumental Lessons Program Information Night and Instrumental Petting Zoo where families could learn about the lessons program housed at Milton High School, and students could explore the different instrument options the program offers. High school students were on hand to help out. During the week, they also also visited each elementary school to demonstrate their instruments to 3rd and 4th grade students. The Fall pre-season schedule will be out soon. Make sure to bookmark our website for information regarding sign-ups, pre-season schedules, coaching staff contacts, and more athletics information. Registration opens on August 1st and will be open until tryouts start. Football tryouts start Friday, August 17th and all other sports start Thursday, August 23rd (B/G Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Swimming, B/G Cross Country, Golf, and Cheer). Students are expected to attend all tryout sessions to be eligible for season. Any exceptions, and/or questions regarding tryouts, please email Ryan Madden, Director of Athletics.
The Rugby Team takes on Hanover in the MIAA State Final in a rematch of last year. The Wildcats lost last year but beat Hanover in the regular season this year and will hope to play well enough to beat them again. The game is at Newton South High School at 12pm on Saturday, June 23rd. Come out and support the Ruggers!
Congratulations are in order for the Boys and Girls Track students that traveled to Nationals in North Carolina! The Girls Distance Medley Relay (Jayda Dillon, Eliza O’Donnell, Elise O’Leary, and Ava Duggan) earned All-American status finishing 6th! Smith Charles placed 9th in the country in the Long Jump. Elise is now a 5-time All-American, and she is returning next year! There have been 11 different All-Americans in the track program in the past two years. We wish Coach Tom Shaw the best of luck in his endeavors across the country.
Lastly, on behalf of the Milton High School Coaching Staff, and entire Athletics Department, Ryan Madden congratulates all teams on a great year. Good luck to all student-athletes intending to play sports at the collegiate level and special congratulations to our athletes who have signed Division I letters of intent :Bridget Mitchell, XC, Track, Providence College; Jasper Malcolm, Rowing, Temple; Isabelle Neville, Rowing, Robert Morris; Kat Buchanan, Lacrosse, James Madison University; Chae Diani, Soccer, Bryant University; Haley O’Brien, Volleyball, Bryant University .
The final car wash of the school year is at Cunningham/Collicot driveway on Saturday June 23d from 9am-12pm to benefit the very busy track teams! Drive off into summer with a clean car!

Congratulations to Tucker 4th grader Mary Fundling who was the New England top scorer in Continental Math this year! Mary scored 29 points out of a possible 30 and was the highest point getter out of 10,000 New England 4th graders. Way to go, Mary!
Collicot 4th grader Reagan Vaughan is the BoomWriter Bee Finals Champion! Reagan qualified for and participated in the first ever BoomWriter Bee Finals. Students from all over the globe participated, but it was Reagan who ultimately garnered the most votes! Wow, we have some accomplished 4th graders in the Milton Public Schools!
Staff: Today, the Glover School gathered to let Miss Sandy (Sandy Zalios) know just how much she means to us and how appreciated she is. When she exited the kitchen, she was greeted by over 500 children who had gathered and on the count of three thanked her for her years of service. Chloe Doherty rapped a cafeteria rap and Patrick Kelly presented her with flowers. The staff gave her gifts and then she stood in the hallway as each and every child filed past and gave her a high five or a hug. Many brought cards and special gifts for her. Sandy has worked at the Milton Public Schools for almost 30 years and retiring this year. Wish wish her a wonderful retirement! You can see some of the fun here.
This week we are saying good bye to two valued employees of the Milton Public Schools. Tracy Grandeau has served as the Director of Pupil Personnel for 3 years and prior to that as the Milton High School Team Chair. Tracy has been a dedicated and talented advocate and leader in the area of Special Education in the Milton Public Schools. I am sure that every parent/guardian and staff member who has worked with Tracy joins me thanking her and wishing her well in this next chapter of her life.
Linda Stefanick has been a high school science teacher in the Milton Public Schools for many years and last year became our Elementary Science/Stem Coordinator. She has moved our science curriculum forward, supported our teachers and successfully applied for grants. We wish Linda all the best as she and her family relocate out of state.
MHS Science educator Kara Yifru attended a State House ceremony today as one of three finalists for the PAEMST Award which are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. The award recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of STEM education. We are proud of Kara’s status as a finalist as we await the national results and know you join us in congratulating her for this recognition.
