At Central Office and at each of our schools, we are busy preparing for next Wednesday, September 1, when our students in Grades 1-12 return to school. This week we welcomed our new MPS staff (you can read more about them below in the MPS Staff section) and on Monday, August 30, we will welcome all of our staff for Opening Day 2021. The excitement is building, as it does every year, and we are looking forward to a wonderful school year in the Milton Public Schools.
Yesterday I sent an update about the start of the school year with details about masks, testing, transportation, athletics, food service, visitors, and more. You can read that letter here. Last night at the Milton School Committee meeting, I presented our back to school plans to the community. That presentation is linked here and the School Committee meeting can be watched On Demand on Milton Access TV. The School Committee meeting includes Q & A and a full discussion about Covid 19 strategies, MPS enrollment, MPS transportation updates, and more. You can also read the letter I sent last week about the MPS mask policy here.
Yesterday was the final day of weekly food pick up at MHS. A huge thank you to Director of Food Services Jackie Morgan and her staff for their work to keep our families supplied with breakfasts, lunches, and produce all summer, and thank you to our Family Outreach Liaison Marti O’Keefe McKenna for supporting our families with delivery and coordination when needed. During the upcoming school year, ALL students are eligible for one free breakfast and one free lunch at school each day. There will also be a la carte items for sale at Pierce and MHS. Students can pay cash or have money on their MySchoolBucks account in order to purchase these additional items.
I know these are busy days for families but I ask you to take some time to read the weekly communication from your child’s Principal to stay abreast of what’s happening in your school community. I will also continue to send my weekly update blog post on Thursday afternoons this year. Along with the MPS website and your school website, these weekly communications will keep you informed throughout the year. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (and follow your school as well, links are below) as we celebrate our students, staff and community this year.

FREE Covid Vaccination Clinic: The Milton Public Schools is once again partnering with Manet Community Health Center to provide a Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, August 28th from 9 am until 12 pm. The clinic will be held at Milton High School, 25 Gile Road in the Copeland Field House (back of the school). This clinic will be open to all. Pre-registration is not available; this is a walk-in registration clinic only and Manet will offer the Pfizer, Moderna and J&J vaccines. Please bring your ID and insurance card if possible – NOT REQUIRED.
This vaccination clinic is open to all and FREE. Those who get vaccinated on Saturday, August 28th will be scheduled for their second shot on Saturday, September 18th (same time frame and same location) unless they are administered the J&J vaccine.
Covid Testing: On Sunday, August 29, the Town of Milton will host a free, drive-through COVID testing day, from 10am to 3pm, at the Department of Public Works (DPW) yard at 629 Randolph Avenue. All are welcome and no appointment is needed.
The next regular School Committee meeting will be on September 8, 2021 at 7pm. All information about upcoming School Committee meetings can be found on the Town of Milton webpage. You can watch School Committee meetings live on Milton Access TV online, live on Milton Access cable channels (Comcast 22, RCN 15) or watch on-demand in the days following the meeting.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Up to date Physical Exams are required for entrance to MPS at any grade level, as well as for currently enrolled rising Kindergarten, 4th grade, 7th grade and 11th grade students. Up to date immunizations are required for entry to MPS and to participate in all after school activities. Please forward this to your student’s school nurse. Details on immunization requirements for School Entry can be found here.
HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
The MPS Calculus Project held its 8th mathematics enrichment program this summer. The program was attended by over 70 MPS students from grades 8 through 12. These summer enrichment courses are used by students to maintain their standing in honors level courses or to make the move to the honors or the advanced placement level.
This year was particularly exciting because we got to see all of our cohorts in person. In addition to previewing new mathematics curriculum, guest speakers from iRobot talked to students about how they use math in their work. Students also participated in DEILAB, a design, engineering, and innovation lab where students build and compete with robots. We are proud of the hard work that our students have put in this summer and look forward to seeing them continue to succeed in the future!

Milton High School is ready to welcome our incoming freshman – the Class of 2025! Please join us on Monday, August 30 from 3-5pm for orientation. MHS Student Leaders will be your hosts and will show you all that MHS has to offer. All new students (in any grade) are welcome to attend.
If you are a 10th-12th grade MHS student formerly in the full remote model, we would also love to see you on August 30. Our goal for you on this day is to show you around Milton High School and answer any questions you may have about Milton High School that will help you to feel comfortable returning to the building in a few weeks. We ask that you show up by 3pm to Brooks Field for a quick welcome message and to be grouped with Student Leaders who will show you around. If you are a formerly remote student who is coming, please complete this registration form. You will check in at Brooks Field but you will be having a tour by student leaders and may not need to be here for the entire orientation. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns prior to the orientation. The schedule for the day is as follows:
- 2:30-3:00PM – Registration (Brooks Field Entrance, if rain, Field House Entrance)

School Supplies: This list is meant to provide families with some direction around purchasing school supplies. Students are not required to buy supplies, but we realize that it can be helpful for families to have some guidance and suggestions.
Chromebook Pick Up for Grade 6 Students: Sixth graders are invited to come to Pierce on Monday, August 30, to pick up their Chromebook. Many of our sixth grade teachers will help with distributing devices so that students will be able to meet some of our staff before the first day of school. In order to facilitate the pick up of devices, we will follow the schedule at right and in this link. Please note that team assignments will be shared with families by the end of this week.
Grade 6 Open House: All sixth grade families are invited to an open house at Pierce on August 31, 2021. At the open house, students and parents/guardians will meet their team teachers and participate in several small group activities facilitated by the sixth grade teachers. The event will be run as two sessions dividing students alphabetically by last name to make the groups smaller. Please note that the grade 6 open house will take the place of the open house that is typically held later in September and that the open house for grade 7 and grade 8 families will be held later in September. IEP & 504 Information Session: Parents and guardians of students with IEP or 504 plans are invited to join Susan Maselli, MPS administrator for pupil personnel services, for an information session about special education and 504 support services at Pierce. This meeting will take place in the Pierce auditorium on August 31, 2021 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

MPS STAFF UPDATES
New Teacher Mentor April Allegrezza shares the following.
This week our new teachers met their mentors at our annual New Teachersʼ and Mentorsʼ Orientation. Being a new teacher, whether to the profession, school community or grade level/subject area, can be a challenging time in an educatorʼs career. In Milton, we seek to ease the transition by providing each new teacher with a seasoned mentor who will help to guide them through the challenges. This past Tuesday, new teachers had the opportunity to meet their mentors, ask questions, discuss concerns and take a guided tour through their school building at the annual MPS New Teachers and Mentors Orientation.
Hosted by the Milton Mentoring Leadership Team, members John Radosta, April Allegrezza, Deanna Magill and Meredith Kempf asked and answered questions, led group discussions and presented new teachers and mentors with materials and resources that will guide them through the mentoring process this year. The orientation is entirely peer driven with teachers helping teachers to thrive and succeed.
Mentors will continue to meet weekly with their mentees, share resources, answer questions and address concerns throughout the year. Mentors are chosen based on their proven performance level and the match of grade and content level to that of their mentee.

TOPSoccer: US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training program for all athletes with intellectual, emotional, and or physical disabilities. The program strives to provide soccer opportunities (the opportunity of soccer) for players to develop at their own pace in a safe, fun, and supportive/inclusive environment. A program in in Milton is beginning in September and they would like to 4-5 more players as they roll out TOPSoccer. Reach out to Heather Montgomery or Maureen Butler if you would like to participate or learn more about the Milton program.
Notification of Student/Child Find 9/1/21: In accordance with Federal and State regulations, the Milton Public Schools provides special education programs for eligible students designed to meet the needs of children attending not only public schools, but also those attending private school at private expense as a Milton resident.
Milton provides all residents with an opportunity to participate in the public schools program using a continuous and systematic effort to identify children in need of special education services.
Milton Schools will arrange for screenings and/or an evaluation of those students ages 16-21 who have not graduated from high school and who are not now attending school, or children ages 3 through 21 who are unable to progress effectively in a regular education program due to a suspected disability consisting of a developmental delay, intellectual, sensory, neurological, emotional, autism, communication, physical specific learning, or health impairment or combination thereof.
For any child in your care for mental health/emotional difficulties, a screening or evaluation may also be appropriate in conjunction with health care recommendations.
If you are caring for a child ages 3-21 years of age who you believe has a suspected disability, and would require special educational services to derive educational benefit please have that child’s parent or guardian contact the school district. Public Notice of the McKinney-Vento 9/1/21: What is the McKinney-Vento Act?
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (“Act”), 42 U.S.C. 11431 et seq., is a federal law that is designed to ensure that homeless children and youth have the same access as other children to public education, including public preschool programs.
Milton Public Schools complies with the McKinney Vento Act, for students who may find themselves temporarily homeless. Parents and guardians should inform the principal or district homeless liaison of their child’s status so that the school can ensure continued access to education and access appropriate supports such as transportation, nutritional access and screening for eligible programs. The district’s Homeless Coordinator is Susan Maselli, Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services. Please read the full McKinney-Vento Act here.

Come Be a Part of the Milton Public Schools Instrumental Music Program!
- Applied Instrumental Lesson Registration for Beginners in Grades 4 and above

The Milton Public Schools Music Department offers instrumental lessons through the Applied Lesson Program (ALP). Students in grades 4 and above may take lessons on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and bass. The 30 minute lessons are given once a week at Milton High School and are scheduled Monday-Thursday from 3:30-9:00 p.m. Lessons are taught by professional musicians who are specialists on these instruments.

We are running a drive for veteran care package supplies through Project 351. Project 351 is a community service based organization that promotes positive change through a year long service leadership program.
Every year, Project 351 carries out community-led service and drives in each of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Project 351’s mission is to “Build a movement of youth-led service that transforms communities, elevates kindness, and advances opportunity by investing in the courage, compassion, and unlimited capabilities of eighth-grade unsung heroes and quiet leaders.”
This summer, in honor of the fallen heroes that gave their lives during 9/11, we are running a drive for care package supplies to give to veterans in MA. To donate, please click here. There will be an All-Sport Parent Meeting on Tuesday, August 31 beginning at 5:15pm in the Field House. All sports except Football will be expected to attend.
- 5:15-5:40pm – Field Hockey, Boys and Girls Cross Country
- 5:45-6:10pm – Volleyball, Cheer and Swim
- 6:15-6:40pm – Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Golf
Mask Mandate: Per the letter sent home on Thursday, August 12, all student-athletes and coaches must wear masks when indoors and on the bus to and from athletic events. Please make sure your child has masks when traveling to away contests. At this time, no decision regarding outdoor mask mandates for sports or indoor spectators has been made. Once there are updates, that will be communicated to the community.
The Town of Milton will observe the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States with two events.
Blood Drive: On Thursday, September 9, from noon to 6:30 p.m., the Town will host a Blood Drive to benefit the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center. A blood mobile sponsored by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital will be parked in front of Town Hall. To donate, please sign-up in advance at this link. Walk-ins will be accepted if time allows. All donors will receive a 9/11 remembrance T shirt.
Vigil: Please join the Milton Select Board and the Milton Interfaith Clergy Association on Friday, September 10, at 6:00 p.m. for a vigil observance on the Town Green/Gazebo at Town Hall. Through words of remembrance and song, we will honor all who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Our special guest speaker will be Sgt. Supervisor Brian Coughlan of the New York Police Department. The vigil will be broadcast live on Milton Access TV.

Walk along the grounds of a working farm while reading a children’s book in English, French, and Spanish. This is a heartwarming story of children who join together to plant and grow food to share with their community – a very appropriate story for this location!

The Town of Milton Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Survey is live. Please click this link and take a few minutes to tell us how you walk, bike, and roll through Milton. These survey results will help the Town and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council as they develop a plan to build a safe, efficient, connected network of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

The Milton Road Race is just a few weeks away, on September 14 at 6pm. The Milton Road Race benefits chosen charities with a portion of the fund-raiser contributing to our Scholarship Fund. Some of the recipients of the fundraising efforts include: Student Scholarships, Holiday Gift Card Drive, Milton Food Pantry, SOCK, Milton Parks and Recreation, Milton Art Center, Milton Early Childhood Alliance and many more. I want to recognize last year’s Collicot 5th Grade class and families who raised money to repair a well in South Sudan as part of their Grade 5 Community Service Project. The villagers once again have a fully functional well thanks to your generosity. As our students learned last year, without water, life cannot sustain itself. Thank you for watering the seeds of change in South Sudan.
