FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

For those of you who were guests at this year’s Milton High School commencement ceremony on June 7th, you were treated to a wonderful event with some stellar speeches. I was unable to attend due to a family obligation, but I have taken excerpts from each of the day’s speeches and compiled them below. I hope you derive as much inspiration from them as our graduates did!

School Committee Chairman Michael Zullas: “Welcome to the beginning. Welcome to the beginning of a journey whose course is unchartered and whose end is unknown. And while the unknown often brings apprehension, try to remember that not knowing what happens next adds to the color, and the flavor, and the excitement of life. Welcome to the beginning of newly earned authority and responsibility.”

Milton High School Principal James Jette:  “…Today I highlight a piece of your legacy as you close one chapter of your life and begin to embark upon new endeavors. Some of you will find immediate success, while others may encounter setbacks or hardship. However, it is my hope that each of you has the motivational fortitude to overcome those obstacles. Rely upon the knowledge and skills you have acquired over the course of the years. Seek the support of family and friends and never give up … never quit!”

Milton High School Class of 2015 President Madelyn Driscoll: “The feeling of excitement and anticipating that we have felt while growing up is something that we will feel many more times in our lives. No matter what you are going to be doing in the coming years, there will be many new things that provoke the feelings you have felt when doing new things in Milton. We have all shared a similar background which contributes to our warm relationship. As you move on, you will be part of new relationships and communities. Your success here foreshadows the success that you will have in your future communities.”

Milton High School Class of 2015 Salutatorian Albert Enyedy: “…Regardless of the amount of work assigned or the amount of sleep we lost, we made it through these four years. We overcame our struggles and persevered until the end of high school (or should I say the beginning of our independent lives?)  Now that we’re here, we can look back at those achievements and enjoy this graduation. As we look forward to our new adventures, whether in college, the workforce or serving our country in the Armed Forces, we thank you, our teachers and parents, for your unwavering support. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Milton High School Class of 2015 Valedictorian Oceane Marescal: “…I spent much of the first three years (of high school) alone in my room with a textbook on my lap – not exactly the fun that I was promised high school would be. I kept expecting that something would magically happen that would propel me out of social isolation. But nothing ever did. Instead, change came in the form of a choice I myself made: joining the Milton Track Team. Joining a new sport senior year may seem like a strange decision for most, but for me, this decision was the best and most liberating choice I have ever made. Track gave me the opportunity I had been searching for the past three years – to come of out of my shell, bond with other people and relieve the stress from school that we have all felt. Being part of the team gave me a sense of acceptance, community and friendship that I’m sure you have all felt at some point in these four years with our own teams, clubs and friend groups.”

The Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents asks me annually to recognize the valedictorian of each class for a special award. This year, I am proud to award the Superintendent’s Certificate of Academic Excellence to Oceane Marescal,  the student with the highest GPA in the Class of 205. Oceane will be attending McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

NEWS AROUND TOWN

The Milton Rotary Club and the Milton Kiwanis Club proudly present the Baron Hugo Noremberga Park “Totem Pole” Dance tonight, Wednesday, June 10th at 6pm. This event will take place at the Baron Hugo Gazebo on the Town Hall Green. Music will be provided by the Black Velvet Band.

Hugo Englebert Lira, was one of the last leaders of the bands that played the hotel and ballroom circuit in and around Boston. Mr. Lira, known better by his stage name, Baron Hugo, worked for more than 60 years as a drummer and band leader. Between 1942 and 1952, Baron Hugo was regarded as “the king of the Totem”. Baron Hugo continued to perform at weddings and special occasions until his death at age 88.

Mr. Lira was a member of the Milton Rotary Club and a very active member of the Town of Milton. He supported many community activities and was a supporter of musical programs for the public schools. He sponsored a number of scholarship funds for Milton students, provided funds for building and maintaining of the Gazebo in front of the Milton Town Hall and established a fund with the Milton Rotary Club, to name a few of his financial contributions to the community.

The Milton Rotary Club will accept donations to the Baron Hugo Lira Fund in order to replenish and thus continue this series of music events for The Town of Milton. Contributions can be made to:

Milton Soccer announces its new Champions League! The Milton Soccer Champions League offers exciting in-town competition, Signing Day, World Cup, and skills clinics by professional coaches.  Built upon the success of the growing K2 and Travel programs, the Champions League brings to all Milton children grades 3-8 a new opportunity for a high quality soccer experience.

As you may have heard, the Travel and Town soccer programs merged in 2012 to become Milton Soccer. Milton Soccer is committed to providing creating a safe learning environment in which all children have fun and develop an appreciation for all aspects of the game of soccer.  Milton Soccer is dedicated to offering a range of soccer program options to Milton families from just having fun to competitive teams at older age groups.

Milton Soccer is proud to introduce our newly designed Champions League.  The Champions League is an in-town league for 3rd – 8th graders.  Rules and team formats are consistent with travel leagues across the state, and games will be refereed by licensed referees from our very strong Milton referee program.  Volunteer parent coaches will have support from our professional coaching partners at UK Elite and coaching license expectations.  In addition to team practices, players will be able to take advantage of UK Elite’s coaching during weekly age group skills clinics.

The exciting season will kick off with a Signing Day event where kids find out what team they are on (named after Champions League teams in Europe), pick up their kit (uniform), and meet their coach.   Teams will play a 9-week season, culminating with a World Cup on the 10th Saturday, a mini-tournament that promises to be the highlight of the season.

This league is open to anyone who lives or goes to school in Milton and who is entering grades 3-8 in September.  All skill levels are welcome – even if your child has never played.  We are committed to creating balanced teams to ensure competitive games.

Soccer is a great sport for all ages.  It is inexpensive, requires minimal equipment and is a great introduction to team sports.  After the fall season, Champions League players will have the choice to join a travel team in the spring, or take a break from soccer for the spring.  We are excited to see the Champions League grow to become one of the premier in-town soccer programs in the Commonwealth.

Milton Soccer Programs:  Pre-K for ages 3-5 (fall and spring); K2 for kindergarteners – 2nd graders (fall and spring); Champions League for grades 3-8 (fall only); Travel League for grades 4-8 in the fall and 3-8 in the spring. Registration for all fall Milton Soccer programs is now open.  To register and for more information, go to www.miltonmasoccer.org
