Last weekend at Westfield State University, the Milton High School Girls Outdoor Track team made history. The team brought home the All State Title from this championship meet, a feat which has never been achieved by Milton High School’s track program. Please read the play-by-play summary below by Coach Tom Shaw:
On Thursday, June 4th, junior Jessy Iwuala traveled to Westfield to compete in the All State Pentathlon Championships. The pentathlon and pole vault events were held on Thursday, but all results counted towards the team totals on Saturday. Jessy finished the day in 4th place, and our rivals, Tewksbury did not have a good day at the Pole Vault so we entered Saturday’s meet tied with Tewksbury.
Score: Tewksbury 5pts, Milton 5pts
On Saturday, June 4th, our Milton girls headed to Westfield to compete against the best teams in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The meet started out with field events. It appeared as if there was some bad voodoo in the field events as the girls from both teams did not score a point. But it is important to note Hanganh Vo as a freshman did compete in the Long Jump at the biggest meet of the season and it was only her fourth time ever long jumping.
The first event up on the track for either team was the 400M hurdles. This event went about as poorly as it could have for us. The girl from Tewksbury finished 4th and Elise O’Leary did what she does best, which is exactly what her coach told her to do. I told her not to stutter step at the hurdles. So she didn’t and by me taking her out of what she normally does she wasn’t able to run her race. This resulted in her finishing in 12th place.
Score: Tewksbury 10pts, Milton 5pts
Next was the 200M. We did not have anyone in the event but Tewksbury had the Div III State Champ in the event. Now it was Tewksbury’s turn to have a stroke of bad luck. Their girl finished 9th in the trials, one place out of scoring. That would prove to be important later! In the One Mile, our two teams have two of the best milers in the state. Bridget Mitchell and Rachel Sessa. Bridget ran the race exactly the way we had planned but her legs just didn’t have the kick needed at the end to hang on for a top three finish. It was a strong courageous race by Bridget. Something we have come to see every time she races. She was within reach of the win with 300m to go. She finished 4th overall with a personal best of 4:58. She is now one second away from Kate O’Neill’s school record of 4:57. Rachel Sessa won the event.
Score: Tewksbury 20pts, Milton 10pts
Next up was the 100M. We had three girls (Abi Jean-Baptiste, Paola Charles and Jaleigha Williams) entered in the event, but only one would make it to the finals. After the trials, Abi and four girls from other teams were all within .01 seconds of each other and two of those girls didn’t make the finals. The officials had to review the video of each girl’s finish and determine their times down to the one thousandth of a second. Fortunately, Abi was one of the two who made it! This was good because it meant Abi was going to earn a medal for herself and points for the team!
Before the finals of the 100M came the 400M. In this race, Elise O’Leary had an opportunity to change things around for the team and that she did! She was the fourth seed going into the race and within the first half of the race, she was already in fourth place. But as she came around to the final stretch of the race, one of the girls ahead of her dropped out. Elise did not let the opportunity go to waste. She held off the girls chasing her and finished third overall, breaking her own school record by a few tenths of a second.
Score: Tewksbury 20pts, Milton 16pts
Next up was the 800M. Colette O’Leary was the top seed in this race and we were hopefully going to get some big points. But as the race unfolded, it quickly became clear this was not going to be Colette’s day. She finished 10th overall, two places out of scoring.
After the 800M was the 100M finals. Abi Jean-Baptiste now had a chance to get on the scoreboard herself. One of Abi’s strengths usually is her start, but the field was stacked with the best talent in the state and on this day she did not have her best start. She finished 8th overall which was good enough for a medal and a much needed point.
Score: Tewksbury 20pts, Milton 17pts
Now I know what you’re thinking — we are slowly closing in on Tewksbury. But we are also running out of events! There are now just three events left. The relays. The good news is that we had three relay teams that we were excited about and expected to score. The bad news is that Tewksbury had the same.
Next up was the 4x800M. Ali Belash was the first leg of the relay for us. She ran the race of her life, running a 2:18. That was good enough for a 4 second PR! And it gave us the lead in the relay. Going into the next two legs, Eliza O’Donnell ran a respectable 2:26 and Ella Affanato ran a respectable 2:28 while nursing a knee injury. But with the competition on this day, respectable was not going to be good enough. By the time Bridget Mitchell received the baton, we were running a distant 8th place and Tewksbury was contending for the win. We finished with the third-best time in Milton High School history, with a 9:34. But only good enough for 8th place and one point. Tewksbury finished second earning 8pts and totally undoing all of the work we had done since the mile. We were now down by 10pts again.
Score: Tewksbury 28pts, Milton 18pts
Now at this point in the meet, you have to realize we are down by 10 points and with only two events left, the most we could earn is 20. But our opponents have two good relay teams left as well. I could see no path to victory here. I went over to the Tewksbury coaches and congratulated them on the win. (And for the record I wasn’t wrong .. they did win!)
The 4x100M will be remembered as the event that breathed life back into our team at a moment when every coach in the stadium had us pegged for done. I can’t tell you the number of coaches that came up to me after the meet and were shocked when they heard we had won. Here is how the 4x100M went down:
Abigail Jean-Baptiste started off for the team and did what she does best, get us a good start. She had a great handoff to Atheana Pierre and we were in position to win the relay. Atheana then ran one of her best relay legs of the season, keeping the team in good position, but her handoff to Paola Charles was a little shaky. No worries! Paola took off and ran her best to make up for it but then her handoff with Jaleigha Williams was also not good. As a result, with a 100m to go, Jaleigha found herself in 4th place and fighting for anything better. In what will surely become Milton Track lore, Jaleigha showed us what it means to compete and never give up. She caught the two girls in front of her just as they were arriving at the finish line and then she out-leaned them both! In the end, .03seconds separated 2nd and 3rd place and only .1seconds between 2nd and 4th place. Jaleigha did it! The relay team finished 2nd! And to our surprise, the Tewksbury team finished 17th. We scored 8 big points Tewksbury earned none.
Score: Tewksbury 28pts, Milton 26pts
Wow! Now we are down by two points with only one event to go. We knew Tewksbury’s 4x400M team could go well under 4 minutes flat. But we also knew that ours was better. One big problem, however, is that we were in the slow heat. This meant if we were going to run a fast time, it was going to have to be without any competition pushing us. The girls in the 4x400M knew what was at stake and they were confident they could get the job done. I would even say they couldn’t wait to get on that track and show everyone they were the team to beat.
The gun went off and Ali Belash had another absolutely amazing relay leg. The senior captain certainly was going to make sure that one of her last races of her high school career was her best. She started off with a 58.99 and gave the team the lead. Josie Cousineau honestly ran the race of her life as well in the second leg, getting a time of 61.35. A huge PR for her and we were still in the lead. Then she gave the baton to Colette O’Leary who was ready to make up for a disappointing 800M performance and propel our team to a time no one could beat. She ran her personal best in the 400M with a time of 57.6 and handed the baton off to her sister with a huge lead. But the time is what mattered most and Elise had to run like she was being chased by an invisible foe — and that she did. When she crossed the finish line, her split was 56.20 — also a personal best and the team had shattered the school record and beaten the second place team in our heat by NINE seconds. The girls ran a time of 3:54 which was three seconds better than the best time in the state this year. Tewksbury and all the teams in the fast heat had to watch us run a time none of them had ever done and dared them to beat it. I can only guess they were a little anxious as their race was about to start. In the end, Tewksbury ran a heroic race, running away from the field but falling short of our time. They ran a 3:55. We earned first place, giving us 10 points. Tewksbury earned second place and 8 points.
No more events left! The meet was over!! Final Score: Tewksbury 36pts, Milton 36pts.
We were both winners!! And that’s how it went down. That’s how we won our first All State Title!

We also had some wonderful news from the Great East Music Festival. On Friday, June 3rd, the Pierce Middle School performing ensembles participated in the Great East Music Festival with overwhelming success! Nearly 250 students in the 7th and 8th grade band, chorus and strings ensembles performed, receiving the highest ratings:

This festival opportunity provided students with a formative evaluation of a prepared program. The end of another school year is upon us and summer is fast approaching. For many families the full days of summer can add an additional financial burden. Are you or someone you know having a hard time putting healthy food on the table? Your family may be eligible for SNAP also known as Food Stamps. SNAP helps you stretch your family’s food budget and keep your family healthy. Calling Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline is a simple way to find out if you qualify for SNAP. Hotline counselors, assisting families in 160 languages, can let applicants know if they are eligible during a phone screening and assist them with the application process
In addition, families can contact the Project Bread hotline directly in late June/early July to learn where the closest Massachusetts Summer Food Service Program is located. The SFSP offers free meals to children ages eighteen and under to ensure that every child has access to the food they need in order to return to school in September ready to learn.
The FoodSource Hotline is open Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information on SNAP or Summer Food Service Program locations, call 1-800-645-8333

FOOD SERVICE NEWS
Our students were treated to some “celebrity” sightings in the cafeterias this week. Principals, secretaries and administrators all took turns “taking the heat,” in our kitchens and helping to serve breakfast and/or lunch to our students. Have a look at some of the fun!
NEWS AROUND TOWN
The 39th annual Milton Road Race will be run Tuesday, June 14th, 2016 starting and finishing at Cunningham Hall. The race is hosted and organized by the Milton Junior Woman’s Club. The first 500 registered runners receive a swag bag with fun goodies in it. The last 3 years we have had more than 700 runners participate in the race between the 5K and 10K runs. All the proceeds for the race go back into our community in the form of grants to local non profits and scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are Milton residents.

Archery, basketball, fencing and even Scottish caper toss are just some of the events that our “athletes” will compete in. Most importantly, Jim will incorporate just how important reading and staying active work together. For ages 3+. No registration required. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

In addition to the fantastic synopsis above, I would also like to add that we recently learned that Coach Tom Shaw has been named D3 Girls Track Coach of the Year by the Boston Globe. Kudos to Coach Shaw!

Students: I would like to recognize all of the students who are taking part in the Pierce Players’ Cyrano de Burger Shack play this weekend. The cast and crew have all put in an incredible amount of hours to make sure that this is one of their best shows ever! This is truly a team effort and we are always amazed by the work of the Pierce Players. Great job!
Staff: I would like to thank Bill Deschenes, our Pierce drama teacher, without whom we would not be seeing the top-notch plays and musicals coming out of Pierce Middle School. He is truly dedicated to his students and it shows. Thank you, Mr. Deschenes!
